This was just stupid. All that passion and she didn't find him when her husband died. Idiots. Both of them. ( )

A slow seduction: That's what I think about when I think about "The Bridges of Madison County." I read a review or two in the past on a different site that mentioned the book moved too slowly for them. And all I could think about was: So much moves quickly in our worlds... shouldn't courting/seduction/wooing be an exception?

I found the book to be beautifully written, poignant, sad and emotional. It painted a picture about marriage, hopes, dreams, love, sensuality, seduction and sacrifice. A must-read, in my humble opinion.

the critics damned it but the rest of it loved it ( )

I have seen the Bridges movie only once in my lifetime, quite some time after it had come out. I could only see the entire movie once, as it made me so very sad, I cried and cried. I haven't been able to sit through it again, in its entirety.

The novel by Robert James Waller is brilliant in and of itself. It's a novella, only about 170 pages, but it still packs a huge punch.
I don't understand the negative reviews, at all. I, also wonder if maybe the people who could not like or admire this novel, also could not divorce their own morality hang ups from the fiction they read. (And since a lot of them read genres like fantasy and sci fiction, this makes it even more incomprehensible).

I have no such issues, having a very open mind. (I am not saying that people who don't like this novel don't have open minds......just that maybe they could not see themselves in this situation, so they could not see what a beautiful love story it truly is....?)
To think that other reviews deny the power and true love in this novel, for silly things like Twilight and 50 Shades makes me feel ill. So I won't talk about this discrepancy anymore, except to say that there is a wide range of people on here, with a VERY wide range of tastes.

Edited to include the ending of this review, which disappeared soon after its posting:

The original audiobook version of this novel is made by Phoenix Audio. Mother narrator of it is the author himself, and his reading of his own, touching story lends a deeper emotional gravitas to the novel than anything else could. If you can find it in your library shelves, or on Wilbor.com, please do. It's yet another rare treat.
4.5 stars, highly recommended.

"Preparing and writing this book has altered my world view; transformed the way I think. And most of all, reduced my level of cynicism about what is possible in the arena of human relationships.
Coming to know Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincade as I have through my research, I find the boundaries of such relationships can be extended farther than I previously thought. Perhaps you will have the same experience in reading this story.
That will not be easy. In an increasingly callous world, we all exist in our own carapaces of scabbed over sensibilities. Where great passion leaves off and mawkishness begins, I'm not sure. But out tendencies to scoff at the possibility of the former, and to label genuine and profound feelings as maudlin, makes it difficult to enter the realm of gentleness required to understand the story of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincade.
I know I had to overcome that tendency initially, before I could begin writing. If however, you approach what follows with a willing suspension of disbelief, as [Samuel Taylor] Coleridge put it, I am confident you will experience what I have experienced. In the indifferent spaces of your heart, you may even find as Francesca Johnson did - room to dance again." ~~ Robert James Waller ( )

In a universe of ambiguity, this kind of certainty comes only once, and never again, no matter how many lifetimes you live.
In an increasingly callous world, we all exist with our own carapaces of scabbed-over sensibilities. Where great passion leaves off and mawkishness begins, I'm not sure. But our tendency to scoff at the possibility of the former and to label genuine and profound feelings as maudlin makes it difficult to enter the realm of gentleness required to understand the story of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid....

If, however, you approach what follows with a willing suspension of disbelief, as Coleridge put it, I am confident you will experience what I have experienced. In the indifferent spaces of your heart, you may even find, as Francesca Johnson did, room to dance again.
Complex things are easy to do. Simplicity's the real challenge.
