The arc of this novel is very creative - the protagonist travels around the world to escape the loss of his love. The little travel details in each location are charming. Greer amusingly illustrates the insecurities and foibles of a jilted love, with some very clever, laugh-out-loud lines. Still, somehow the book didn't win me over. ( )

Arthur Less sets off on a series of professional and personal trips that will take him right round the world in order to mark his fiftieth birthday and avoid his ex's wedding to someone else.

The comedy is mainly of the hapless traveller abroad type, but the author tells it well so there were lots of genuine LOL set pieces. It helped that I found Arthur very likeable, though I can see he would get on some people's nerves, and I was pleased for him at the ending. ( )

Tender, touching, insightful, charming, thought-provoking look at the human condition - what I thought might be just a sweet little tale turned out to be a real work of art that's fully worthy of its Pulitzer. ( )

I suppose one day I will need to listen to a book and this will still be lying silent in my phone...but until that day, I just couldn't listen to another SIX hours of pure depression. ( )

About halfway through, it began to feel as if this novel is about writing this novel. Arthur Less, the protagonist, is a writer of some success whose latest manuscript has been rejected by his publisher. It’s about a gay man in San Francisco approaching age 50—as is Arthur—and is depressed about his life. It takes place in one twenty-four-hour day, something like Joyce’s Ulysses.
Arthur makes it a practice never to tell what an unpublished book is about, but a woman asks him in such a disarming way after both have had the right amount of wine, and Arthur tells. Her reaction: “It’s a little hard to feel sorry for a guy like that.”
She took the words out of my mouth. I found it hard not to feel irritated at Arthur and wondered why this book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Yes, there are some fresh observations and some funny scenes. I enjoyed the chapter set in Berlin, where Arthur’s German is not as good as he thought it was, which at least entertains those he encounters. The chapter set in India is good as well.
Berlin, India: there are other locales as well, a different one for each chapter. For Arthur has embarked on a world trip. Towards the end, he rewrites his manuscript, sending his protagonist to exotic locations as well, where he, like Arthur, experiences mishap and humiliation.
In the end, Arthur discovers…. Well, I’ll leave that out, except to say that I found the concluding chapter surprisingly satisfying after my reaction to the rest of the book, ( )

From where I sit, the story of Arthur Less is not so bad.

By his forties, all he has managed to grow is a gentle sense of himself, akin to the transparent carapace of a soft-shelled crab.
Freddy put on his red glasses, and in each aquarium a little blue fish swam.
From the open window came the song of roofers hammering and the smell of molten tar.
Arthur Less, encircling the globe! It feels cosmonautical in nature.
It is a bad musical, but, like a bad lay, a bad musical can do its job perfectly well. By the end, Arthur Less is in tears, sobbing in his seat, and he thinks he has been sobbing quietly until the lights come up and the woman seated beside him turns and says, "Honey, I don't know what happened in your life, but I am so so sorry," and gives him a lilac-scented embrace. Nothing happened to me, he wants to say to her. Nothing happened to me. I'm just a homosexual at a Broadway show.
