Soon to be a major television event from Pascal Pictures, starring Tom Holland. Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, the USA Today and #1 Amazon Charts bestseller Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man's incredible courage and resilience during one of history's darkest hours. Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager--obsessed with music, food, and girls--but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier--a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler's left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich's most mysterious and powerful commanders. Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share. Fans of All the Light We Cannot See, The Nightingale, and Unbroken will enjoy this riveting saga of history, suspense, and love.… (mere)

This book is going in my top ten favorite books. It is a well told tale of a true story from World War 2. A hero named Pino Lella and his experiences, both harrowing and endearing during the last two years of the war. I loved all of the folks we were introduced to by author Mark Sullivan and I despised all of the villains as well. This book is truly a treasure. ( )

This fictionalized account of real life Italian war hero Pino Lella captures the sense of confusion and unpredictability of the war experience in Milan. Pino takes great risks to escort fleeing Jews across the alps before becoming the personal driver of the main Nazi commander in Italy and working as a spy for the Allies. Along the way he loses friends, family, and a lover to the capricious twists of fate. One thing that struck me was how easily humans were willing to forgo basic human goodness in the pressure cooker of war and the fact that Pino didn't lose that moral compass of right wrong really does make him a hero & survivor. Sullivan, Mark. Beneath a Scarlet Sky. Amazon, 2017.
Mark Sullivan is a writer of mysteries and historical fiction, and his book, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, is both. Both the author and its subject, Pino Lella, attest to its truthfulness, but there are now websites that dispute some of its facts. Pino was a teenager when he began helping Jewish refugees escape across the Italian Alps to the Swiss border. When he was 18, became a soldier in the Italian army and the driver for a German general, on whom he spied for the resistance. The story, per se, is fascinating, whether true or not. As I was reading, though, I kept wishing that the story had been told in some other way, either as a full-blown work of history, or as a first-person narrative on the order of Thomas Berger’s Little Big Man. The limited third-person narrative has no internal documentation and sometimes falls flat in conveying character. The mysterious German General Leyers is in some ways a more interesting subject than Pino. Pino had a fascinating life after the war, and I wish the novel were structured in a way that provided more detail about it. Nevertheless, we are running out of time to tell this sort of World War II survivor’s story. This one is certainly worth reading. 4 stars. ( )

What a beautiful and tragic story of Pino Lella. First I'd just like to thank Pino for sharing his story and to Mark for writing it so the rest of the world could learn.

This is the real story of Pino Lella. In the first scenes of the book you meet harmonious Pino. He is running around the streets of Milan having fun with his friends and chasing girls. He is a happy teenager who loves his family.

The novel begins with the Nazi invasion in Milan. Pino and his younger brother are sent away to the Alps to survive the war when Pino begins helping Jews flee to Switzerland. Shameful that he is not home fighting like a man, he returns to Milan where his parents force him to enlist as a Nazi soldier because they are convinced the war is almost over and once Pino graduates from bootcamp, there will be no war to fight. When this turns out to be far from the truth it is too late and Pino becomes a driver for a high commanding Nazi soldier. This becomes Pino's opportunity to be an Allied spy and help bring down the Nazis, ultimately saving his family, his country, and his one true love. If he can survive the war... ( )

We owe so much to men like Pino Lella. WWII era novels are my favorite genre of book and I have read all the great ones. This is one of the greatest. Pino's story will remain with me forever. I was moved to tears, so many times and felt as I was there each step of the way.
I know our paths will never cross, but Pino, I salute you. May you live the rest of your days blessed in the beauty of your gorgeous country and memories of your precious Anna. Thanks Mark Sullivan for sharing this remarkable story with the world. ( )

Negative, snarky (but without knowledge at the time that the book is in essence a literary fraud - a fact that is, unfortunately, not yet widely known).
