3857. Confederacy of Silence: A True Tale of the New Old South, by Richard Rubin (read 14 Feb 2004) This is a well-told account by the author, who just out of college gets a job on the newspaper in Greenville, Miss. as a sports writer and comes to know a sensational black quarterback for the football team of Greenville High. The account of the author's time in Greenville is given in full detail, and the account of the trouble the high school star gets in after high school is absorbing--including the riveting story of the resulting trial. This book had such a strong final section that some of the triviality and less than interesting parts earlier in the book are overwhelmed by the outcome. The book does not make one feel good about present-day Mississippi, even though the legal badness of the old Mississippi which could, e.g., exonerate Emmett Till's murderers, has changed. ( )
