Mad man zooming about on small bike, just my cuppa. I really loved the day to day happenings of Colin's day. There are some very funny tales to tell and I laughed out loud. I realise policing is a very serious matter and Colin seems THE man for the job. A feel good read Gently amusing tales from a few years spent as Sergeant (not detective constable - the clue is in the title!) on Scilly; a group of islands where policing is decidedly more gentle than on the mainland, and perhaps rather less action packed. Some genuinely funny parts, although sometimes the need to make a rather ordinary situation funny for the book makes him appear like he's trying a little too hard to angle the story towards laughs. But for the most part its amusing. Having been to Scilly many years ago, it did make me want to revisit - it can be a tranquil and beautiful place; although the book describes the reality of living there and its not all paradise and easy living, by any stretch. It clearly suits the author, having been brought up around boats as a child, he's well at home on the islands - although the boating specific lingo sometimes left me a bit nonplussed. A gentle read, which can be dipped in and out of; betraying its origins as blog posts (apparently), each chapter can be read as a self contained piece without connection to the next. Supposedly (according to the title), the book was due to be turned into a TV programme but I can't find any info on that so maybe it didn't happen. Post script would be that he's moved back to the mainland and to other policing duties (which I guess gave him the freedom to have this published). Enjoyable as a light read. Probably not one I'd read again though. This light-hearted book is just what the doctor orders for a pick-me-up in February. Sergeant Colin Taylor tells amusing tales of life on the Isles of Scilly, which may not be entirely free of crime but is nevertheless an interesting place to police. The book is probably best read over a longer period; each chapter is self-contained to the point that some of them repeat each other a bit in giving context. It is consistently funny and warm and served with great lashings of self-deprecation. I would consider it essential reading for anyone who wants to travel to Scilly, and especially for anyone who wants to live there; one chapter talks about the challenges of living there during the winter months, when the ferry to the mainland doesn’t run. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
'Policing is like this everywhere but not everywhere is Scilly' Meet Sergeant Colin Taylor, he has been a valuable member of the police force for over twenty years, five of which have been spent policing the 'quiet' Isles of Scilly, a group of islands off the southwestern tip of the Cornish peninsula. Colin has made it his purpose to keep the streets of Scilly free anchor thieves, goldfish abductors and other culprits, some drunken, intent on breaking the law. This book is the first hand account of how he did it. Coupled with his increasingly popular 'Isle of Scilly Police Force' Facebook page, this book charts the day to day trials and tribulations of a small-island police officer, told in a perfectly humorous and affectionate way. This book is a fantastic read. No library descriptions found. |
