"Relationships are awful. They'll kill you, right up to the point where they start saving your life. Paul and Alice's half-sister Eloise is getting married! In London! There will be fancy hotels, dinners at "it" restaurants and a reception at a country estate complete with tea lights and embroidered cloth napkins. They couldn't hate it more. The People We Hate at the Wedding is the story of a less than perfect family. Donna, the clan's mother, is now a widow living in the Chicago suburbs with a penchant for the occasional joint and more than one glass of wine with her best friend while watching House Hunters International. Alice is in her thirties, single, smart, beautiful, stuck in a dead-end job where she is mired in a rather predictable, though enjoyable, affair with her married boss. Her brother Paul lives in Philadelphia with his older, handsomer, tenured track professor boyfriend who's recently been saying things like "monogamy is an oppressive heteronormative construct," while eyeing undergrads. And then there's Eloise. Perfect, gorgeous, cultured Eloise. The product of Donna's first marriage to a dashing Frenchman, Eloise has spent her school years at the best private boarding schools, her winter holidays in St. John and a post-college life cushioned by a fat, endless trust fund. To top it off, she's infuriatingly kind and decent. As this estranged clan gathers together, and Eloise's walk down the aisle approaches, Grant Ginder brings to vivid, hilarious life the power of family, and the complicated ways we hate the ones we love the most in the most bitingly funny, slyly witty and surprisingly tender novel you'll read this year"--… (mere)

Hmmm, I'm surprised to learn that this book is now a movie. That being said, good actors could make anything worth watching, I suppose.

The People We Hate at the Wedding, while well-written - although at times so wordy I got lost - was just plain boring. There were some very graphic scenes that almost seemed out of place in comparison to the rest of the humdrum tone of the book.

As for the plot, it was really simple: a dysfunctional family comes together at sibling's wedding. That's about it. The sister is screwing her boss, which of course, doesn't end well, the brother lives with his horrible narcissistic partner who doesn't believe in monogamy (this one doesn't turn out well either), and the eldest sister is spoiled and doesn't really 'get' real life. Mom is still clinging to hope of a reunion with her ex-husband, eldest sister's dad. In the last few pages, everything wraps up as expected.

Why a 4/5 you might ask? Because I give a 3 if you can write and finish and publish a book; it is not easy. I give a 5 when the book is good all around, not just the writing but the plot. A 4 comes along when the book is meh but still deserves a nod because it is well-written. The People we Hate at the Wedding, we well-written.

Enough said. ( )

I love a book with different POV so that's a point in the book's favor but - wow - these people were all just terrible. I didn't detest every character but certainly most of them.

Fast paced and easy to read but I'm unsure that I could ever suggest that you spend your time popping into the heads of this family but if pretentious dysfunctional people are your thing this is the book for you! ( )

Words I learned from reading this:

milquetoast: a timid or submissive person
antipodes: someone from ANZ
viscous: something with a thick and sticky consistency
sconce: a small fort defending a pass or castle gate
sambuca: an Italian aniseed-flavoured liqueur

(surmised from the Amazon kindle US English dictionary.) ( )
