Italy, 1943--Germany occupies much of the country, placing the Jewish population in grave danger during World War II. As children, Eva Rosselli and Angelo Bianco were raised like family but divided by circumstance and religion. As the years go by, the two find themselves falling in love. But the church calls to Angelo and, despite his deep feelings for Eva, he chooses the priesthood. Now, more than a decade later, Angelo is a Catholic priest and Eva is a woman with nowhere to turn. With the Gestapo closing in, Angelo hides Eva within the walls of a convent, where Eva discovers she is just one of many Jews being sheltered by the Catholic Church. But Eva can't quietly hide, waiting for deliverance, while Angelo risks everything to keep her safe. With the world at war and so many in need, Angelo and Eva face trial after trial, choice after agonizing choice, until fate and fortune finally collide, leaving them with the most difficult decision of all.… (mere)

Eva and Angelo

I had mixed emotions reading this beautiful story. I loved the writing and the tale being told, but I didn't like the reason it needed to be told. What a beautiful story, filled with love and heatache. Amy Harmon did a great job once again! ( )

Well written with strong characters. I really liked the Italian setting and the bit of Italian politics involved in WWII. The author described the awfulness of war and the resilience of those trying to help their Jewish neighbors and friends. It made me appreciate the role of the Catholic church in Italian Jews. What an awful period to live through!!

Strong love story throughout that I somehow found off-putting though I can't quite figure out why.....it was more of the story than I usually like. Also, the end was a bit too tidy, but satisfying none the less. ( )

Eva Roselli has always loved Angelo Bianco since they grew up as best friends in Milan, Italy. Angelo has always loved Eva but he loved the church more when he entered the seminary to become a Catholic priest in Rome. When fascist assumed power in Italy, many Italian Jews believed that they would fair better than those in Germany. However, they quickly learned this not to be the case. Angelo used his position in the church to shelter a number of Jews and assist them in finding sanctuary out of the country. When he convinces Eva to join him in Rome with forged documents presenting her as his sister, Eva uses her anonymity to assist her family and other Jews to avoid capture and deportation to concentration camps. However, as Eva becomes more emboldened, Angelo doesn't know how he will continue to keep Eva safe. The ordeal will also reveal Angelo's true feelings about Eva.

I initially began reading this book but finished it with an audiobook. Although the first was enjoyable, the narrator brought the story to life with her skill in dialogue with different dialects. This novel was a touching love story about two individuals who would go to great lengths to save the other. I have read about the impact of WW2 now through many books and from the perspective of numerous characters from across the globe. This book will be included as one of my favorites. I believe that I heard the narrator's voice crack with emotion from time to time as she narrated the book. ( )

At the moment I just can’t cope with another book about WWII Italy. The last one still resonates. Later.
