"An absolute delight! ...one of the most appealing military gentlemen ever to wear a sword." â?? Diana Gabaldon, Author of Outlander

The year is 1777. As the American Revolutionary War rages across the sea, London is swept off its feet by Jack Absolute, the dashing rogue in Richard Sheridan's comedy The Rivals.

When the real Jack Absolute, former captain of the 16th Light Dragoons, returns after years abroad he is immediately embroiled in an illegal duel over a backstage tryst at the Drury Lane theatre.

Jack escapes with his life, only to find himself pressed again into the King's service as a spy for the British in the Revolutionary War.

With his Mohawk blood brother, Ate, at his sideâ??and Loyalist beauty Louisa Reardon on his mindâ??Jack leaves England and sets sail for the wilds of North America.

When Jack learns there is a traitor in his ranks, he is dispatched as a double agent to root out the secrets of the Illuminati, a secret lodge within the Freemasons with their own agenda in the colonies.

With no one left to trust and more blood spilling with each passing day, it's no longer clear if Jack is a spy...or the target.

From the streets of London to the bloody battlefields of Saratoga, from forest fights on the Hudson to the seedy corners of wintry Philadelphia, Jack Absolute marks the EXHILARATING BEGINNING of an epic 18th century adventure.

One of the best historical fiction novels of the Revolutionary War with a charismatic hero.

Fans of Simon Scarrow, Bernard Cornwell, Jeff Shaara and Diana Gabaldon will eagerly follow the adventures of Jack Absolute.

3.5 stars-I enjoyed The Blooding of Jack Absolute more than this one, which I thought was predictable in parts, but it had enough surprises to keep me reading. The author’s note at the end swayed me to rate it a little higher too-it looks like he did a good deal of research and put a lot of heart into this book. The characters of Jack Absolute, and his blood brother Ate, are good fun, and I will continue to follow this series. ( )

The author, an actor, doesn't seem to realize that a character might be acceptably
inconsistent when presented onstage by an actor but not when recreated in the reader's mind from an author's words. But a laughably inconsistent protagonist, historical facts described without historical feel, falling back on the native side-kick trope along with others, no really, I have wasted too many words on this only if you are a boy who is into late pseudo 18th nonsense book. This book is what I would call a 'typical' C.C. Humphreys - the first 2 were 'Indiana Jones meets Tudor England' - this is 'Indiana Jones meets ? the American Revolution' (from the British/Canadian) side. In this case the hero is Jack Absolute a former soldier/spy who gets into all sort of trouble and narrow escapes both in London and in North America (Quebec and the states bordering the St. Lawrence). If a cat has nine lives then Jack must be a cat - he escapes from more 'inescapable' situations than Houdini. Part of the fun of reading Humphreys is trying to figure out how his heros will manage to get themselves out or be rescued from seemingly impossible situations (tied up in the forest with a rattle snake turned loose on top of you, or imprisoned on charges of treason in a jail from which there is no escape and being moments from the gallows). This is historical fiction at its best - lots of facts, dates and characters who really did exist with a fictional hero considerably larger than life. Enjoy ( )

I am a huge fan of ‘Last of the Mohicans’ and the only reason I wanted to read this book was the time period. I was curious about an English officer’s viewpoint of the Revolutionary War, and it truly is eye-opening.

This also is my first time reading Mr. Humphreys and I didn’t really know what to expect, and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised by his clear, witty and thoroughly engaging voice. He had managed to put me in the middle of this wonderful adventure.

I never heard of the play ‘The Rivals: A Comedy’ which was written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan with Jack Absolute as its main character, so once I realized that the author of that play was Jack’s friend who decided that Jack’s life would make a great story and a play, I was hooked on both, the real and the ‘play’ Jack. Both were immensely charming, funny and entertaining.

However, the ‘real’ Jack Absolute was much more complex and three-dimensional. He is a mix of Alpha and Beta heroes with many flaws, but first and foremost, he’s a soldier and a spy, and his specialty is intelligence work.

He is handsome and smart, fun to be around and one is never bored in his company. His best friend and companion is a Mohawk, Até and may as well be his shadow as he’s always next to him.

Mr. Humphreys has created so many secondary characters that each one was unique and entertaining, almost as much as Jack was.

I wasn’t surprised that I enjoyed this novel and if you would ask me under which genre it falls, I’d probably name a few, romance included.

This novel was well plotted, written and researched. The author did an outstanding job in characterization of almost every character in the novel. I would have been sad to leave Jack and his world, if I didn’t have ‘The Blooding of Jack Absolute’ waiting to be read, and that should be a treat as it’s a prequel to this book.

Highly recommended to all bookworms that love history, adventure, romance, and plenty of comedy.

Up to page 280 of the 305, I was ready to give this historical adventure 5 stars.

Excellent pacing, colorful writing, a dashing plot full of twists, turns, cliff hangers, battles, intrigues, chases, duels, Indians, Jacobites, rattlesnakes, spies, invisible ink, romance, sex, secret societies, and many reverses. The story is skillfully framed around historical events and there is a convincing treatment of historical figures mixed deftly with the fictional characters.

I "absolutely" loved the main conceit, that Sheridan's character in The Rivals Jack Absolute, was based on a real figure and said figure returns to London after many years to find the play a smash hit and his name a household word. I admired the many facets of the hero--warrior, actor, duelist, lover, spy, sometime British officer, adopted Iroquois brave, an admirable combination of bravado and self-reflection. I especially loved his faithful Indian companion, Ate, with his terse manners and his penchant for quoting Hamlet.

Unfortunately, the denouement of the book was awful. The forcibly contrived ending was bad enough, but the sudden change in tone and direction, disappointing reader expectations that had been built up for almost 300 pages, is indeed a cardinal sin for a novel of this type.

In his afterword, the very talented author seems to indicate that his publishers had some hand in approving the idea of the book. Too bad they did not give him better advice about the ending. ( )
