DNF: 21% read and still can't get into the story. I don't care about the characters at all. I might return to this book later, but so far very uninterested, and the story buildup and the pacing are taking forever to do anything or go anywhere. Also, is the purpose of the beginning suppose to keep the reader perpetually confused the whole time? Have no idea what, who, or why is going on. ( )

I loved this book so much. I can’t wait to read more books by this author. I liked how everything flowed and made sense. And that while there was foreshadowing and hinting at things to come, things didn’t unfold exactly as I thought they might, which makes reading for me more enjoyable. I also liked that I felt she had set up the story to follow a general format that is not uncommon for novels, but she deviated from that, and I found that very refreshing. Though, at times I did have to flip back to try and reorient myself to which part of the timeline I was reading about, it was overall easy to follow.

This is one of my top recommendations now. ( )

Ugh. I only read half of this book since it has a sort of pretentiousness that was rough to get through. This book starts off with so much unnecessary world-building that gets quite confusing due to multiple timelines and the pacing is just plain bad. Because of the focus on world-building, the main characters have little development thus leading to no connection with the characters as it is hard to understand their motivations. I found that I simply didn’t care what happened and didn’t understand what was going on most of the time. I almost stopped 100 pages in and only read half because it has such good reviews, but ultimately I had to put it down. I’m just not sure why everyone is raving about it. Did I miss something? ( )

i thought i would like this a lot better than i did, but i still found it enjoyable!

ninth house has the perfect mix of dark academia vibes and supernatural elements, but i wanted to read more romance (normally i’m fine without overwhelming romantic aspects, but the whole story i just felt like something was lacking, and after reading some reviews i know a lot of people agree that that “something” was romance. even a romance between supporting/side characters would’ve been nice) and more horror (i think i was grossed out more than i was shocked or scared) than i did.

overall, this was a nice read, and i’ll pick up the second book after that’s released, but hopefully in the future books there will be more of the aspects this book was lacking.

completed for the 2021 popsugar reading challenge; prompt #15—a book with a black-and-white cover ( )

Ninth House, by Leigh Bardugo, is a good read for fans of the academia, secrets, and murder in The Secret History, Although where The Secret History skirts into horror to discuss morality of murder and the classical mysteries, Ninth House is more about the privilege powering secret societies. And, instead of just hinting at dark, ancient rituals offstage, Ninth House goes right in.
