'O felt her presence behind him like a fire at his back.' Arriving at his fourth school in six years, diplomat's son Osei Kokote knows he needs an ally if he is to survive his first day - so he's lucky to hit it off with Dee, the most popular girl in school. But one student can't stand to witness this budding relationship- Ian decides to destroy the friendship between the black boy and the golden girl. By the end of the day, the school and its key players - teachers and pupils alike - will never be the same again. The tragedy of Othellois transposed to a 1970s' suburban Washington schoolyard, where kids fall in and out of love with each other before lunchtime, and practise a casual racism picked up from their parents and teachers. Watching over the shoulders of four 11-year-olds - Osei, Dee, Ian and his reluctant girlfriend Mimi - Tracy Chevalier's powerful drama of friends torn apart by jealousy, bullying and betrayal will leave you reeling.… (mere)

This is a retelling of Othello. A YA version with kids in grade 6 in the 1970s. Osei is the new boy at school, and he’s black. He almost immediately has a connection with the popular blonde girl, Dee. But others aren’t impressed with that, particularly the feared Ian, the class/school bully. Ian decides to get some revenge on the new boy.

I’ve never read Othello, so I didn’t know how this was going to turn out. As awful as the racism and bullying was from the kids, I was shocked at it from the teachers! Although I really enjoyed the book (and hated Ian!), I was surprised at the abrupt ending. I didn’t like the end. Often that brings down my rating, but I decided to leave it as I thought all the way through, as I was reading. Although disappointed with the end, overall, I really enjoyed it. ( )

This is a masterful, taut retelling of Othello that is profoundly unsettling in every way, not least because it is set in 6th grade. ( )

I love the way Tracy Chevalier writes and this novel is no exception. It is not a big book and I read it quickly. I understand that it is a modern version of Shakespeare's "Othello." The tragedy of Othello is transferred to a suburban school in the 70's and takes place in the course of one day. The new boy is the only black child at the school and is befriended by the popular white girl. The inborn prejudices of the time are seen in this school children and also their interesting thought process around 1- a new student and 2- a new student who is black. ( )

This book is part of “the most innovative rewriting project of the 21st century” according to Hogarth books, an imprint of Penguin, which is giving a contemporary spin to Shakespeare's plays with various popular authors like Anne Tyler (Taming of the Shrew), Gillian Flynn (Hamlet) and Edward St. Aubyn (King Lear) among others. New Boy is a re-telling of Othello set in 6th grade in 1970s Washington DC. It all takes place at school in the span of one day. We have Osei, a Ghanian boy who has just moved to the area and is not warmly received in the all white school by anyone, teachers included, except for Dee the most popular girl in the class whose kindness and fairness make her beloved by all. Her best friend Mimi is prescient, but weak and has been going out with the class bully Ian for a week. Blanca completes the trio of girls -- she is brash, emotional and annoying, and is going out with Caspar, the class heartthrob. Rod is the class stooge and Ian's flunky. If you remember your Shakespeare, it lines up with Othello, Desdemona, Emilia, Iago, Bianca, Cassio and Roderigo. Even the teachers fill roles, though not very impressively. The parallels are well-drawn and the tragedy is set in motion, not with a dropped handkerchief, but with a traded pencil case. Knowing the outcome, I was interested to see how it all played out and was not disappointed. The playground figures prominently in the love, deception, and harm. I only had a hard time with the speed of the action -- 8 hours at most! and the 6th grade seemed a bit of a stretch for some of the sentiments and depth of feeling -- 8th grade might have been more believable -- certainly I know middle school is full of drama, but I felt like this was a stretch. Excited to check out some of the other versions and to brush up on my Shakespeare! ( )
