Writing: 4.5; pretty good writing in this volume that is able to capture a humorous take on the DC property.
Theme: 4.5; child versions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and a host of other DC heroes and villains are all invited to Evergreen Camp, where they are encouraged to compete to their fullest potential. During these contests, secret powers are unveiled and one-by-one, the youngsters begin to disappear, sparking a camp-wide search led by Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, and Diana Prince, leading to deep revelations.
Content: 5.0; some of the kids are involved in dangerous battles and events, but it's all played for laughs and is very slapstick.
Language: 5.0; nothing objectionable.

The second book in the Secret Hero Society alternate universe series, Fort Solitude delivers a humorous yet also engaging adaptation of our favorite DC heroes and villains, in child form. Just a sidenote, this is my first entry in the series, so I don't know the whole plot from book one. Some things were referenced and brought into this volume from the first, but it isn't anything too deep that makes me regret reading this one first. Clark Kent reunites with his friends Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince, who have all been invited to Evergeen Adventure Camp. Such iconic DC characters as Barry Allen (the Flash), Vic Stone (Cyborg), and Joe Kerr (say it aloud . . . a real sly name) appear, both befriending and annoying the trio of main characters. Suddenly, the counselors begin to exhibit interest only in their campers' abilities, which are slowly unveiled in camp contests -- for example, Barry's speed comes into play in a race and a pie-eating contest. After the campers' abilities are revealed, they suddenly begin to disappear one-by-one, and the counselors show no concern in these vanishings. The heroes soon band together to investigate, uncovering a deep plot within the structure of the camp. A final battle ensues, pitting the campers against an unexpected evil. I really, really enjoyed this book. I remember seeing years ago the first book and being interested, but I didn't get it for full price. Since then I've looked for it, but I couldn't remember the series' title until I found this one. Now, I'm eager to read the rest of the series. The writing and illustrations are both superb, reminiscent of something like Calvin and Hobbs. I really enjoyed the characterizing of these characters in young versions, and of course it's Batman that stands out. He's always eager to don his homemade superhero suit, and he is always grim, mysterious, and distrustful of everyone. There are also tons of references packed in relating to other aspects of the DC universe. This is a great book that adapts the classic heroes and villains of DC Comics into children. Highly recommended; I look forward to reading more of the series. ***Finished August 6, 2019*** ( )
