I'd be a liar if I said that this book was flawless. I don't believe it was. But Heyer did something here that she hadn't really done in any other novel of her's that I'd read. She effectively and realistically chronicled the gradual growth and change of two human beings and their relationship.

There was so much that was real about these people and the relationship. To be sure, "love" is a nice icing on the cake. But there is so much more to a lifelong alliance than the "honeymoon"-style attraction. And I think Heyer effectively shows that here. I was drawn in to by the Austen-esque tributes but I stayed for the realism and the beautiful tapestry of camaraderie, trust, and respect.

So, while it doesn't hold up very well when compared to classics like Jane Eyre, To Kill a Mockingbird, and others, I would give it 5 stars because I think it represents Heyer's personal best. ( )

One of my favorites of Heyer’s. A realistic look at marriage. Also a realistic look at what a “near miss” could look like.

4.5 stars, I enjoyed this one much more than I expected to. My friend described it as a more mature novel than the Grand Sophy or Faro's Daughter and that was apt. My only dislike was the long-ish military sections which I found rather boring. But I adored Jenny and Adam and it was a very satisfying read. ( )

Georgette Heyer is the only romance writer I read - because she makes it readable. The first 200 pages of this were better than the last 100. I still prefer her mysteries, but I'll read more of her romances. ( )

A thoroughly enjoyable Regency about a marriage of convenience, without the breathless and alarming situations of the typical entry in this genre.

It also has deeper characters and situations, but I've come to expect those from this author. I'm keeping this for a later reread. ( )

The library at Fontley Priory, like most of the principal apartments in the sprawling building, looked to the south-east, commanding a prospect of informal gardens and a plantation of poplars, which acted as a wind-break and screened from view the monotony of the fen beyond.
