You go through life thinking theres so much you need. . . . Until you leave with only your phone, your wallet, and a picture of your mother. Marin hasnt spoken to anyone from her old life since the day she left everything behind. No one knows the truth about those final weeks. Not even her best friend Mabel. But even thousands of miles away from the California coast, at college in New York, Marin still feels the pull of the life and tragedy shes tried to outrun. Now, months later, alone in an emptied dorm for winter break, Marin waits. Mabel is coming to visit and Marin will be forced to face everything thats been left unsaid and finally confront the loneliness that has made a home in her heart.

An intimate whisper that packs an indelible punch, We Are Okay is Nina LaCour at her finest. This gorgeously crafted and achingly honest portrayal of grief will leave you urgent to reach across any distance to reconnect with the people you love.

I am on a roll reading sad books without plots. Blergh. At least this one had a hook: Marin runs away from home and is super depressed, but why? We know pretty early on that she's was raised by her Gramps and he passed away. But it doesn't quite explain Marin's level of freak out. She abandons everything, flies across the country and spends weeks alone in a motel. The story is told through flashbacks and it's gradually revealed why Marin is suffering.

This is an atmospheric, lyrical book about loneliness. I did not really enjoy it, but I think I see why the Printz committee picked it. ( )

Sweet. Melancholy. Tender. Makes your heart ache. I didn’t want it to be over. ( )

This book was nowhere on my radar. but as it won the Printz award this past week, I felt I needed to. And I must say I was on the fence about it.

The pros--it is a BEAUTIFULLY written story. Young adult fiction is very subpar and yet "We are Okay" uses language and prose in an elevated way. It is also a story of healing from grief, of the definition of family, and finding wholeness and peace from the past. I was blown away by the fact I was actually drawn to the story. And the ending is both satisfying and ambivalent. We didn't have all the answers and frankly, we don't always find them when processing grief.

However, this book did NOT need the lesbian storyline. It didn't add much. I feel it was written for a couple of reasons (the author's personal life AND because it is an element teens do relate to). Yet "We Are Okay" had WAY more to it that the self-discovery of Mabel and Marin. I more felt they were friends with each other who had experimented....and that experimentation only made Marin more confused. For a while I did not know if the book was indeed LGBT until the part of the girls at the beach. Yeah I felt it unnecessary.

This book will appeal to me. It wasn't a favorite of mine yet I can say I found some redeeming things ( )

Atmospheric, emotional, lovely. This story is enhanced by the setting. ( )
