Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond's big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.… (mere)

This book is written from the point of view of Eleanor Oliphant, a 30 year old office accounts worker who lives alone and doesn't comform to what is 'normal'. She sticks rigidily to her routines involving work, shopping, speaking to her mummy, and her weekends. It's at this point I realised something was more than a little off with Eleanor as she spends her weekends blackout drunk. I'll stop the synopsis here as I want to avoid spoilers but essentially this book is about trauma and loneliness. The book is roughly divided into 3 sections titled, Good Days, Bad Days, and Better Days. Due to all the lockdown mess I was feeling a bit down yesterday and that coincided with me starting the Bad Days section of the book. There is an internal monologue chapter on loneliness which snuck up on me and hit me in the gut when I was least expecting it.

I want one of 3 things from a book. I want to be either entertained, informed, or emotionally engaged, and this book ticked 2 of those requirements. It's not the best book I've read this year, and if I'm brutally honest (like Eleanor) it just felt short of 5 stars. However, I just can't give a book 4 stars when it has made me laugh and also effected my on a emotional level at the same time so it gets 5. ( )

I loved this book, it was one I didn’t want to end.

Eleanor is an odd duck and I appreciated that but I also wanted to be able to help her navigate the world around her. This was one of few books that made me care that much about the main character. ( )

Eleanor at the beginning of the novel is one of those annoying people with poor social skills who lives a very small and isolated life. She develops a crush on a local musician and plans in her head their life together. To prepare herself for this life, Eleanor begins doing out of character things and also develops a friendship with a co-worker. Gradually the reasons behind Eleanor’s life and behavior being to emerge and she becomes a character to be admired. One of the best things about this novel is the basic kindness Eleanor receives from the people in her life as opposed to her family experiences. ( )

Quirky and surprisingly humorous given the theme. ( )

What a sad and unusual story. I say unusual but honestly I am sure the situation is not all that unusual. A young woman with a rough upbringing tries to adapt normally to life as an adult, only made harder due to her lack of social skills skills. She’s also a very intelligent woman and you would think this would make it even harder for her. I feel this actually makes it easier because she’s able to see things from all points of view. In her mind, she is completely happy. She does see things going on around her and part of her feels she should be participating in these situations, although due to her intelligence, she does not find it necessary and in a huge way, looks down on the people involved.
Given how well adapted she seems in many ways I was extremely surprised at the end in regards to her mother. I can see why this book was praised so highly and I’m glad I finally got around to it. ( )

The human need for connection, initially scorned by Eleanor, is this heart-rending novel’s central theme. Eleanor Oliphant is most definitely not completely fine, but she is one of the most unusual and thought-provoking heroines of recent contemporary fiction.

From pop-star crushes to meals for one, the life of an outsider is vividly captured in this joyful debut, discovered through a writing competition and sold for huge sums worldwide...And what a joy it is. The central character of Eleanor feels instantly and insistently real...This is a narrative full of quiet warmth and deep and unspoken sadness. It makes you want to throw a party and invite everyone you know and give them a hug, even that person at work everyone thinks is a bit weird.

Sport is a mystery to me. In primary school, sports day was the one day of the year when the less academically gifted students could triumph, winning prizes for jumping fastest in a sack, or running from point A to point B more quickly than their classmates. How they loved to wear those badges on their blazers the next day, as if a silver in the egg and spoon race was some sort of compensation for not understanding how to use an apostrophe.
I have always enjoyed reading, but I've never been sure how to select appropriate material. There are so many books in the world—how do you tell them all apart? How do you know which one will match your tastes and interests? That's why I just pick the first book I see. There's no point trying to choose. The covers are of very little help, because they always say only good things, and I've found out to my cost that they're rarely accurate. "Exhilarating" "Dazzling" "Hilarious." No.
She was shiny too, her skin, her hair, her shoes, her teeth. I hadn't even realized before; I am matte, dull, scuffed.
