The relatives from Virginia come to visit. They hug, eat, sleep, garden and fix things. The relatives go back home after staying for "weeks and weeks."
The pictures in this book really create the happiness and comfortable disarray of family reunions.
I would use this book with younger children and have them talk about and draw pictures of their own relatives. It would be a good activity when talking about how families can be made up of people other than mom, dad and siblings. ( )

This is the story of a family that packs up their station wagon and heads north to visit family. They spend a wonderful time eating, playing, and visiting with family. The storyline isn't very detailed, however, the pictures are what make this book spectacular. The illustrator does a wonderful job of giving each family member his/her own special character. Kids would especially love the pictures in this book. ( )

This is a story about the anticipation, joy, and longing for more, of time spent with family. The descriptive language that Rylant uses creates a relaxed, relatable feel to the story that my students really enjoy..."Talk about hugging! Those relatives just passed us around their car, pulling us against their wrinkled Virginia clothes, crying sometimes.". The illustrations also add a bright, cheery, and sometimes hilarious element to the story. Great book! ( )

I disliked and liked this book to a certain extent. I did not like this book for a few reasons. First, I felt that the storyline and plot was boring because there was no big conflict or peak event. It did not keep my attention good to read through the full book. Young children may get lost in the middle and not pay as much attention as there are no exciting events. Although, this book did have some positive contributions. For example, the illustrations were very descriptive and had a lot of detail, one could look at just the images without reading and know the storyline. It also had some descriptive language, “so much laughing and shining faces and hugging in the doorways.” The descriptive language allows us to be connected fully into the story like we are there. The big message is that family is important and to cherish all moments, even the small moments like listening to each other breath at night.

A fun, light-hearted look into a family that love each other. So many families are depicted as dysfuctional these day that it's refreshing to read/see a family that genuinely enjoys spending time together and knows how to make the best of it.The illustrations capture the tone of the book perfectly and extend the meaning of the text. Cynthia Rilant has some incredible books that I get nostalgic for a time in my childhood. The time when all my relatives came to celebrate a holiday, it was fun. Mostly.
We did not have cool summer reunions as the family does in this book. What I did like was celebrating the holidays with a huge, scrumptious meal. The stories were funny or interesting. I learned that my grandfather came from Russia and had to fight in the Japanese- Russian war. He was nine years old. He did not like to discuss this period of time in his life, but that meant I could ask other relatives to see if he told them anything about this time.
I learned that Big Mama, my great grandmother, crashed into the window of a car dealership. When the policeman came, she said
" Young man I was here in this town before you were born. This is a two way street. You better not write me a ticket." My uncle had to secretly pay the ticket without Big Mama's knowledge.
I loved the pictures of the relatives eating together, playing music together, and sleeping together. I always feel nostalgic, because so many of my relatives are deceased now. I remember the good times when we were together.
There were plenty of times when heated discussions occurred. When one relative was not speaking to another relative, but I refuse to remember the unhappy times.
