Almost continual warfare raged in Europe during the period 1300-1500. These wars were the furnaces in which many of the modern European nations were forged. Since this book was published in 1975, both the research into medieval equipments, and the style of medieval recreation art have moved forward a very great deal. The temptation to dismiss the book as a mass of stereotypes and ill-judged illustrations is counteracted by the replacement with much better and more specialized publications from this company, and the charm of having the photos taken from that early 19th century effort by Sir Samuel Meyrick. However, this is a limited interest indeed. Buy a later and more focussed book from the same publisher. There is a small section on the Hussite Wars, but no specific Hussite plates.. ( )

Almost continual war raged in Europe during the period 1300-1500: the Hundred Years War between France and England; the Scottish wars and War of the Roses in England itself; the struggles for political and religious freedom from feudal overlords in Switzerland, Bohemia and Flanders; to stem the advance of the Turks in Hungary; between the city states, republics and papal territories of Italy; civil wars and the fight against the Moors in Spain; and the invasions of Italy by the French at the end of the 15th century.
