When listeners last heard Maisie Dobbs, it was 1938, and the world was on the brink of war. Maisie herself was on a dangerous mission inside Nazi Germany, where she encountered an old enemy and the Fuhrer himself. In In This Grave Hour, a year has passed, and Maisie is back home in England - yet neither she nor her nation is safe. Britain has just declared war on Germany and is mobilizing for the devastating battle ahead. But when she stumbles on the deaths of a group of refugees, Maisie suspects the enemy may be closer than anyone knows.… (mere)

I am addicted to this series. I virtually never read two novels at once but I hadthought that this one would be different enough from my main book, but it turned out that there were a lot of similarities including a found/lost mute child.

In this book I wasn’t that wild about the murder mystery but I loved the other mystery, that of the young girl.

It’s another great dog and horse book.

I read these for the characters & the relationships & the settings and all were top notch this time around.

I looked up information about the barrage balloons over London at the start of WWII. I always end up doing some research when reading the books in this series. I always learn some things.

I enjoyed all of the author's notes in the back of the book! Great extras!

3-2/3 stars ( )

Maisie looks into the murders of refuges from WWI from Belgium. Interesting plot, with the usual Maisie perfection! ( )

This 13th book in the series is finally back in London.... it was great to have the "old gang" of Billy, Sandra and Maisie back together. It was interesting to read how the British people reacted to the declaration of War on 3 September, 1939. The murder cases were, as always, a bit convoluted, but the rest of the cast of characters made this quite enjoyable.
I listened to the audiobook, and as always, Orlagh Cassidy's narration was outstanding! ( )

Maisie is hired by Dr. Francesca Taylor, a Belgian an British embassy worker, to find the murderer of Frederick Adden who was killed on August 4, 1939, at St. Pancras Station where he was an engineer. Adden was a Belgian refugee from WWI who had married an English girl and elected to stay in England at the end of the war. As Maisie takes up the case, another Belgian refugee and current banker, Albert Durant, is murdered in the same manner and later others follow. In the meantime, Britain declares war on Germany on September 3rd and London's school children are transported to the countryside to keep them same from German bombing. Two young boys and a young girl, Anna, are brought to Chelstone to be housed. Anna does not speak, but is self sufficient and loves animals. This is another mystery for Maisie to solve. ( )

This is a great series of books - but as things develop, I find I like the bits about the characters more than the mystery. This one takes place at the start of WWII. As always, I enjoyed Maisie and Billy's investigation. Am hoping the next one focuses more on Maisie and Pricilla's new endeavor with a heavy dose of Billy (I love Billy) and a little mystery sprinkled in...(or several small ones). ( )
