"The Knights of the Golden Circle was the largest and most dangerous clandestine organization in American history. It amassed billions in stolen gold and silver, all buried in hidden caches across the United States. Since 1865 treasure hunters have searched, but little of that immense wealth has ever been found. Now, one hundred and sixty years later, two factions of what remains of the Knights of the Golden Circle want that lost treasure--one to spend it for their own ends, the other to preserve it. Thrust into this battle is former Justice Department agent Cotton Malone, whose connection to the knights is far deeper than he ever imagined. At the center is the Smithsonian Institution--linked to the knights, its treasure, and Malone himself through an ancestor, a Confederate spy named Angus "Cotton" Adams, whose story holds the key to everything. Complicating matters are the political ambitions of a reckless Speaker of the House and the bitter widow of a United States Senator, who together are planning radical changes to the country. And while Malone and Cassiopeia Vitt face the past, ex-president Danny Daniels and Stephanie Nelle confront a new and unexpected challenge, a threat that may cost one of them their life. From the backrooms of the Smithsonian to the deepest woods in rural Arkansas, and finally up into the rugged mountains of northern New Mexico, The Lost Order is a perilous adventure into our country's dark past, and a potentially even darker future"--… (mere)

I think Steve Berry is by far the best writer of historical fiction out there today in his arena. Dan Brown has fallen by the wayside. Cotton Malone should be in the movies!!! ( )

Former DOJ operative Cotton Malone has been asked by the Smithsonian to check out the possibility of a treasure from the Civil War. Cotton's great great grandfather had been a Confederate spy, as well as a guardian of a fabled hoard of Confederate gold held by the Knights of the Golden Circle. The problem is that the Knights are still looking for the treasure. The map to the treasure is a series of carved stones, each guarded by a sentinel of the Knights. Along the way, former President Daniels becomes involved upon the death of the senior Senator from Tennessee. Daniels can feel that something is stirring in the House of Representatives; a something that could forever change the balance of power in America's government. Knights, members of Congress, the Supreme Court, the Smithsonian, old mines in Arkansas, vengeance, murder, a lust for power, and tangled love triangles muddy the waters. It was a pleasant read, but slower than most books in this series. I had to keep putting it down every half hour or so. ( )

Interesting story centering around the Knights of the Golden Circle the treasure connected to them, the missing Confederate archives and the US Constitution. Immediately you are drawn into a rather interesting conspiracy with divergent factions seeking basically the same power and riches for far different reasons. From the Speaker of the House to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and including the Smithsonian playing a critical part of this adventure in American history and critical issues surround the Civil War and the aftermath. The writing, as always, is solid and the story line very interesting with credible characters. For the most part the pace of the story keeps the reader interested and wondering what will be around the corner and the where the story will lead them. There are a couple of places where development of the story slows the pace making me wonder it the story is maybe overly long however the details are important and of interest so this can be overlooked in the overall story.

Overall another interesting and entertaining Cotton Malone thriller from Steve Berry. Would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good thriller mixed with enough factual historical background to make for an intriguing and sometimes thought provoking story. ( )
