"An astonishing debut crime thriller about an unforgettable woman who combines the genius and ferocity of Lisbeth Salander with the ruthless ambition of Walter White. The Crenshaw Six are a small but up-and-coming gang in South Central LA who have recently been drawn into an escalating war between rival drug cartels. To outsiders, the Crenshaw Six appear to be led by a man named Garcia. but what no one has figured out is that the gang's real leader (and secret weapon) is Garcia's girlfriend, a brilliant young woman named Lola. Lola has mastered playing the role of submissive girlfriend, and in the man's world she inhabits she is consistently underestimated. But in truth she is much, much smarter--and in many ways tougher and more ruthless--than any of the men around her, and as the gang is increasingly sucked into a world of high-stakes betrayal and brutal violence, her skills and leadership become their only hope of survival. Lola marks the debut of a hugely exciting new thriller writer, and of a singular, magnificent character unlike anyone else in fiction"-- "An LA gang is secretly lead by a brilliant young woman"--… (mere)

This book is fantastic. I've reread it twice now, and lent it to several friends. Highly recommend ( )

In some ways, this is a run of the mill gang/cartel turf battle novel. However, the gang leader is a woman. Lola is a smart, tough, woman who has managed to keep her status as leader a secret for a long time. A botched deal leads to her unveiling and the rest of the story as she tries to survive the consequences. It is the internal monologue which runs in Lola's mind that ratchets the novel up a level, in my opinion. The reader is offered a glimpse into the making of a gang member. Neighborhood, familial dynamics, lack of alternative opportunities all play a role, but it is Lola's childhood experiences with an addict for a mother which toughen and damage Lola most. A very good read. ( )

Lola is at times an uncomfortable read. The main character, Lola, shadow-leader of the Crenshaw Six, is extremely ruthless and this makes that you're immediately hooked. And as things start to spin out of control, Lola will take even more cruel decisions.

But, back to the start. Lola, secretly the leader of a small gang in Los Angeles, makes a bad decision that put her and hers right in the middle of two battling cartels. While now her life is in immediate danger she to a level likes it because this is the moment for her to step out of the shadows and stop being underestimated.

It was a surprisingly good book. I'm usually not really into books about gang/drug wars, but Lola's story was very good. I liked her connection to Lucy, but her conflicted relationship with her brother didn't feel real to me. If you do not like to read about violence, mutilation, rape, murder and the like, this probably isn't the book for you. Otherwise, it's a very compelling read.

The first time I tried to read this book, I couldn't get into it at all. The next time I tried, I was hooked. Lola is strong, powerful character, and book read like something playing on television. ( )
