Fiction. Mystery. Short Stories. HTML:Four previously uncollected stories from one of the great mystery writers of our timeâ??swift, cunning murder mysteries (two of which feature the young Adam Dalgliesh) that together, to borrow the author's own word, add up to a delightful "entertainment."

The newly appointed Sgt. Dalgliesh is drawn into a case that is "pure Agatha Christie." . . . A "pedantic, respectable, censorious" clerk's secret taste for pornography is only the first reason he finds for not coming forward as a witness to a murder . . . A best-selling crime novelist describes the crime she herself was involved in fifty years earlier . . . Dalgliesh's godfather implores him to reinvestigate a notorious murder that might ease the godfather's mind about an inheritance, but which will reveal a truth that even the supremely upstanding Adam Dalgliesh will keep to himself. Alright, nothing special. It doesn't sell PD James as an author. ( )

Four Christmas themed short stories. An enjoyable quick read. ( )

The first volume of two collected volumes of P D James short stories, the second being "Sleep no more: six murderous tales". Though I ordered them in publishing order I received and read the second first and think it has a slight edge over this shorter collection of four stories, two of which feature Adam Dalgliesh. I'm not entirely sure why as both collections are selected from works published throughout James's career, perhaps the introduction of Dalgliesh moves the collection into more familiar territory? Still, these are thrilling enough, each featuring a murder and all but the last (where the reluctant detective is a young Sergeant Dalgliesh in Agatha Christie mode) with a twist in their tail. A light read which I completed the afternoon I received the book. Recommended for detective story fans and James fans alike. ( )

I enjoyed this collection of 3 short stories. They were varied and consistently well-written. Perfect for the holiday season. ( )

Vaikka ollaankin ihan huhtikuun kynnyksellä, niin olisin kirjalta siksi halunnut, että kaikki tarinat olisivat enemmän sidoksissa jouluun. Mutta minkäs teet, siitä miinus yksi tähti.
En ole muistaakseni ennen lukenut P.D. Jamesia ja pidin hänen kirjoitustyylistään. Tulen varmasti myöhemminkin lukemaan hänen kirjojaan. ( )

"The Mistletoe Murder"
One of the minor hazards of being a bestselling crime novelist is the ubiquitous question, "And have you ever been personally involved with a real-life murder investigation?"; a question occasionally asked with a look and tone which suggest that the Murder Squad of the Metropolitan Police might with advantage dig up my back garden.
