Norse Mythology af Neil Gaiman

  1. 91
    Edda af Snorri Sturluson (CGlanovsky)
CGlanovsky: The Edda feels like the primary source material for Gaiman's retelling
  2. 31
Mabinogion Tetralogy af Evangeline Walton (LamontCranston)
  3. 10
Odd and the Frost Giants af Neil Gaiman (sturlington)
  4. 00
Expecting Someone Taller af Tom Holt (themulhern)
themulhern: The one is a fine retelling of Norse mythology, the other is humorous fantasy based on Norse mythology. So they compliment each other nicely. And both are written rather cleverly.

My library hosted a 'Blind date with a book type' of ongoing event throughout the week of Valentine's day. Each book was wrapped with a little note that had four key words/phrases related to the book. This book had Mythology and God of Thunder on it and I figured it can't be that bad. I was right! This book is quite a good read.
I have only read a handful of mythological book and Neil Gaiman definitely did an amazing job with Norse Mythology. He ultimately ties every story and, in turn, every event to the ending with Ragnarok. If you were wishing to learn moral lessons, this is not that type of folktale. There's some crassness on behalf of the Gods that really brought to light the fact that they aren't perfect; however, they always win. ( )

I'm a complete sucker for Norse Mythology (have been since childhood and that's a long, long time ago) and Neil Gaiman writes in a way that resonates with me. Therefore I am unashamedly biased. If you too are a sucker for Norse Mythology and like Neil Gaiman's writing, you will probably enjoy this book. You may not give it five stars like I did, but you will enjoy it. ( )

I love Thor and Loki and this book just made me smile and towards the end CRY! I loved it, and the ending was so beautiful and this was a true ending! ( )

I've read a few different versions of the Norse myths and legends (both fictionalized and the original Eddas)m but Gaiman's retelling is by far the most approachable. Obviously there are many stories that he didn't include due to the fragmentary nature of the written records and constraints on the final size of the volume, but I'll forgive this editing choice he this gives the collection a much stronger narrative. It is too bad that he didn't go completely comprehensive and annotative, but I guess that's up to the scholars (and I sincerely hope that I can find a book that lives up to that expectation). What Gaiman presents in this collection may lack completeness, but the micro-collection makes clear his passion for the myths themselves and gives readers of his novels an entry-point into the most prevalent group of myths that influence his own writing. I hope eventually that he write another grouping of stories, since there are so many Norse gods with interesting stories to be told (and retold). ( )

These were so interesting. I've not read much about the Norse gods. Loki is definitely the star of the book IMO. He's forever up to something. The other gods are more serious. He livens everything up. This is told in a cool way so that even if it's a gruesome tale of gore the reader gets maximum enjoyment. Norse Mythology was definitely a treat. ( )

Introduction
It's as hard to have a favorite sequence of myths as it is to have a favorite style of cooking (some nights you might want Thai food, some nights sushi, other nights you crave the plain home cooking you grew up on).
Many gods and goddesses are named in Norse mythology.
