"26 years ago: A girl in South Dakota falls through the earth, then wakes up dozens of feet below ground on the palm of what seems to be a giant metal hand. 9 years ago: She is a top-level physicist leading a team of people to understand exactly what that hand is, where it came from, and what it portends for humanity. Today: with the remainder of the giant robot found and assembled, every question answered about the mysterious contraption raises two more. But the team behind the greatest discovery of the last millennium might be out of time when a second robot suddenly appears, looming over downtown London"--… (mere)

I'd been waiting to read this sequel and I wasn't disappointed. Loved it! It felt a little slow at the start but it soon picked up, and turned into an intense and occasionally dark story as we said goodbye to a few favourite characters. And the ending ... damn you, Sylvan Neuvel. Get that next book out there now! ( )

I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the second book in the Themis Files as much as the first, but I was pleasantly surprised and think I may have enjoyed it more than the first. Neuvel is not afraid to kill off characters and I think I enjoy that unknown factor in this series. ( )

Neuvel, Sylvain. Waking Gods. Themis Files No. 2. Del Rey, 2017.
Waking Gods is a close sequel to Sleeping Giant, in which young Rose Franklin stumbles on a titanic hand made from a non-terrestrial metal. She grows up to be a physicist who makes unraveling its mysteries her life’s work. Other pieces of the figure are eventually found and assembled, revealing it to be robot requiring two operators. It has a humanoid form, a mashup between Gort, the robot from The Davy the Earth Stood Still, and the Colossus of Rhodes. Spoiler for the first volume: you guessed it, ancient alien artefact. Waking Gods begins when another one of the machines, even bigger than the first, materializes in a park in central London. Meanwhile, human beings are learning what it takes to operate the first machine, which turns out to require more than just button pushing. There is some strong character drama all through the series, and once you suspend your disbelief about the technology and reconcile yourself to the discontinuous oral history structure, the whole thing becomes quite engrossing. After reading [b:Sleeping Giants|29932639|Sleeping Giants (Themis Files, #1)|Sylvain Neuvel|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1460894189s/29932639.jpg|42721200] I thought that the sequel can not get any better. Well, It can and it does. You just can't put this book down. Each chapter takes you on a wild ride and it's a fun one! This series is really proving to be gripping! It's not one I expected to like so much, but like its predecessor, this book was been incredibly distracting and immersive. I've grown to really like the characters (and be saddened by some of their fates), and I even find the technical descriptions of science and genetics fascinating. This novel was a quick read, but also a memorable and striking one. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a good book. ( )
