I think this book is for children at the intermediate and primary level. The pictures are for everyone including the story it is telling about being able to do the things you set your mind to. It is a true story about Jean-Michel and the things he went through as a child and young adult that got him to being a famous artist. Radiant Child is the story of Jean-Michel Basquiat. It tells of his childhood, drawing on the floor with his mother. The car accident that changed his life, his mother's illness, and his overcoming these challenges and going on to open the doors of the art world for himself and other minority artists. The story is written and illustrated by Javanka Steptoe who was heavily influenced by Basquiat. The illustrations are rich and colorful and add to the story. The book won both the Caldecott medal and a Corretta Scott King Award. A strong multicultural story to inspire generations to come. Classroom applications, literacy, introductions to biographies, multicultural lessons and SEI lessons on perseverance.
This book is about Jean-Michel Basquiat's life and how he becomes a famous artist. He goes through hardships and trials that get him to where we is in life now. It is a great way to show children that one can do anything you set your mind to. It may not come easy but nothing does and to push through hardships is a part of life. The other thing is this book is a great way to incorporate art in a book. HæderspriserDistinctionsNotable Lists
Jean-Michael Basquiat and his unique, collage-style paintings rocked to fame in the 1980s as a cultural phenomenon unlike anything the art work had ever seen. But before that, he was a little boy who saw art everywhere: in poetry books and museums, in games and in the words that we speak, and in the pulsing energy of New York City. Now, award-winning illustrator Javaka Steptoe's vivid text and bold artwork echoing Basquiat's own introduce young readers to the powerful message and art doesn't always have to be neat or clean--and definitely not inside the lines--to be beautiful.
