Before he brilliantly traversed the gritty landscapes of underworld Detroit and Miami, the incomparable Elmore Leonard wrote breathtaking adventures set in America's nineteenth-century western frontier—elevating a popular genre with his now-trademark twisting plots, rich characterizations, and scalpel-sharp dialogue. For every story of inspiring moral courage in America's untamed West, there's one of greed and duplicity, of corrupted souls willingly sacrificed to a merciless deity of ill-gotten gold. The New York Times-bestselling Grand Master brings us seven unforgettable western tales of noble stands and cowardly compromises—and battles of will more devastating than a blazing gunfight.… (mere)

I'm not sure when these short stories first were published, but I think the 1950s. Some of the words would be considered objectionable today: "greasers" (for Mexicans), "bucks" (for Indians), but probably reflect authentic language usage and attitudes. The actual writing is pretty good--I was honestly surprised at the quality of the prose.

Apache Medicine: Army scout Kleecan encounters bandits who stole a military payroll, and leads them into a trap. A good story, tightly written, with an unexpected ending. 3.5 stars

Red Hell Hits Canyon Diablo: an army detachment challenges an Apache war band to a drinking contest. 3.5 stars

The Last Shot: a Confederate soldier/spy fires the last shot of the Civil War in an assassination attempt. 2 stars

Blood Money: a group of outlaws, cornered by a posse, gambles with high stakes. 3.5 stars

Saint with a Six-Gun: a young deputy makes a bad decision, but it turns out all right in the end. 3 stars

Man with the Iron Arm: a bully gets his comeuppance in the most satisfying way. 4 stars

The Longest Day of His Life: the best story in the batch, a man minding his own business runs afoul of some outlaws, and has to take a stand. This one feels authentic, without the usual hero tropes. In fact, none of these stories is the usual Western fare. Each feels unexpected, but also inevitable. ( )
