A wide selection of nursery rhymes, poems, songs, etc.

A nice enough collection, including a few Mother Goose and a smattering from several other traditions. ?áMore like a sampler, I mean to say. ?áThere were even some rhymes I've never seen before. ?áI don't like that it's oversize - that appeals more to those who purchase than those who read: too large for lapsit or for little hands. ?áAnd the pix are too detailed for circle time in a daycare. ?áBut it is well-organized by theme/ subject: counting, seasons, animals, playtime....

Among the ones I've never seen before is The Zoo in the Park in the playtime section. ?áHere we go to the zoo in park, the zoo in park, the zoo in the park. ?áHere we go to the zoo in the park, so early in the morning. This is the way the elephant walks/ the kangaroo hops/ the monkey jumps/ the birdie flys, so early in the morning." ?áI'd revise it to get rid of the zoo reference (I can't stand the idea of caging animals for display) and to add more verses, more than four animals.

I also appreciated being reminded that Golden Slumbers, made famous by the Beatles, is a lullaby by Thomas Dekker.

This book was full of all sorts of nursery rhymes I grew up with and even some I had not heard of! The gentle watercolor drawings help to enhance the dreamlike poems for the children. The picture are very calming, and so are the rhymes. I think this is a great book for children at home to be read at bedtime because the calming poems and art will lullaby them to sleep.

A charming collection of poetry divided into seven different categories. Rhymes and poems about animals, counting, shapes, colors, playtime, food and seasons.
