“The California Gold Rush” by Judy Monroe, with assistance from John Mark Lambertson (Director of the National Frontier Trails Center, Missouri), is suitable for the ages of about 8 to 12. The book accurately depicts what occurred during and after the gold rush in California. Readers will be kept interested, as it contains a few excerpts from letters written during those times, such as; “Laboring men at the mines can now earn in one day more than double a soldier’s pay and allowances for a month” (Monroe, 20).
The information is well set out, with moderately large font applied and appropriate subheadings. Some other useful features are a contents, a map of “The United States at the Start of the Gold Rush”, a timeline, glossary, list of recommended internet sites and an index.
“The California Gold Rush” is attractively presented, containing both photos and detailed illustrations throughout, that suit what the text is describing. All of the pictures are also suitably labeled. ( )
