This book looks at the numerous roles of African American soldiers. Clinton follows a chronological order beginning in 1492 and ending with the Gulf War. It looks at African Americans' roles during exploration, slavery, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, and the Gulf War. She uses a simple, matter-of-fact style to give a very general overview. Clinton uses black and white photos throughout the book to show important African Americans that she mentions or to show the different types of activities the soldiers may perform. This book has a table of contents, an index, and a section on selected sources. Under each picture, it lists from where the photo was taken. This book would be a great addition to any classroom. History teachers can use this to introduce students to the different wars or to introduce civil rights or Black History month. Math teachers can have the students create a graph to show how many blacks were killed in each war versus how many whites were killed. English teachers can have students write letters or journals from the point of view of one of the soldiers listed in the book. Students could also write an essay on how African American were treated unfairly during one of the wars. This book would be an excellent source for teachers who want to show students other ways that African Americans were treated unfairly. ( )
