Beautiful photographs illustrate this early reader (level 2). It covers rockets, probes, satellites, and the space shuttles, as well as events such as Yuri Gagarin's first flight, Apollo 11, the Mars Rover, and even space travel. There are comprehension questions and a glossary at the end, and the table of contents and index can be used as examples of features of nonfiction books. ( )

This book discusses the many aspects of space including astronauts and shuttles. The book gives out many facts so it is very helpful for identifying elements of non-fiction texts such as descriptive attributes and characteristic events. The book is also filled with many text features so would be a great example for students when they are learning about text-features. It is a good book for beginning readers.

This book is good for the 1st and second grades as it has the feel of an early reader book in that it gives facts but in kid language such as "the rocket goes up and up and blasts into the sky losing its boosters as it soars", which seemed to add a younger element to it. I liked the fact that it gave the phonemic spelling in syllables in brackets next to harder words such as "Vostock" and also had some vocabulary in bold throughout the book such as "mission" and "spacecraft." I would not use this in my current third-grade class but could see using it in younger grades as a supplement book or to feature on the top shelf of my library or in a basket of books in space exploration. It gives a good general explanation of space and spacecrafts and how they work and look and a one page history of them. ( )
