After a painful divorce, Garland Durrell looks forward to settling into her home on Cape Cod to make the quilts that are her passion. On the first morning of her new life she finds a man and a small boy washed up on the beach, both badly wounded. Since the town chief of police is strangely reluctant to help, Garland takes on the care of the mysterious pair who don't seem to remember what happened to them--and feels her own heart begin to heal. Alasdair does remember. He and his son Conn are the last of the ruling family of selkies from the waters around the Cape, locked in a decades-long struggle with an evil that threatens all, selkie and human. He's not sure if he can trust the lovely, blue-eyed woman who takes them in until he touches one of her quilts and feels the magic she's sewn into it...and the emotions that he never thought he'd feel again. But the evil entity that stole Alasdair's sealskin and left him for dead quickly senses both his presence and Garland's magic, and is determined to destroy one and possess the other. Only Garland and her quilts, made with a power she barely believes she has, can save them all from destruction-if she can avoid being destroyed first.… (mere)

Skin Deep by Marissa Doyle was entertaining. I wonder where she came up with the name of Garland for her protagonist. I would like a little more development of how Garland fell in love with Alasdair. The author shows a lot of the relationship between Rob (the doctor) and Garland. What was missing were the little nuances that make someone fall in love. The prose was well written and gave a vivid picture of the area. There is one plot hole I found a bit confusing. If the antagonist could strike at Alasdair using his skin, why didn't he do it earlier? ( )

My first Marissa Doyle book. Such lovely prose, with wonderful descriptions. I liked watching the main character, Garland, pick up the pieces of her life as we get her back story. I also enjoyed the characterisation of her mysterious guests, and how she bonded with them in various ways. Their confusion over modern life and language was well written.

Garland's friend, Kathy, was a hoot and a wonderful character to have in the mix, with all the small town gossip and ways of being. I enjoyed the way Marissa wrote of the how the town approached newcomers and kept their secrets close, even when Garland was obviously involved and unaware of what was going on. The explanations at the end rounded that up so well.

The only character I had issues with was the love interest, Rob. He came across as incredibly entitled. He even said at one point he'd been falling in love with her for 2 years since meeting her at a party - like somehow that meant she owed him the same? Truthfully I was waiting for him to turn and become something menacing (thankfully the supernatural part of the book meant we didn't need another threat to Garland). She called him nice and lovely but I didn't think he was at all!

Overall, it was an intriguing story and well written and I'll be looking out for more of Marissa's books in the future. ( )

Garland has retreated to a small town in Cape Cod to endure the final throes of divorce from her controlling husband, Derek. This is her new home and sanctuary. She had been drawn to, involved in, and dedicated to her creative art of quilting. Her husband had stifled that until she had very little to look forward to that wouldn’t bring down his disdain and even fury. It’s no wonder she’s hidden herself away from his world of shallowness and superficiality.
After a stormy night at sea, Garland takes an early morning stroll on the beach and discovers a man (Alasdair) and his young son (Conn) severely injured. She takes them to her home and does her best to draw help for them to heal and recover from the amnesia that Alasdair claims he has. Conn is immediately drawn to her warmth and love, a motherless child who appreciates her voice, touch and caring. Alasdair has to hide their true nature of being selkies not just for their own safety for also for Garland’s.
They discover that her quilting brings them peace and healing but they must also fight the prejudices of Garland’s friends of her small town. Many people know a lot more of what’s going on than they’re willing to share with Garland. There is a much more terrible danger tracking Alasdair, Conn and now Garland. Can they work together to fight this or is the disaster looming closer and closer?
This is my first introduction to the writings of Marissa Doyle and I was immediately drawn into the novel from Chapter 1. The portrayals of her friends in the small town and the range of emotions Garland discovers show in-depth character development of herself, her two new friends, and the people of the town. I highly recommend this as an e-book and kept finding myself drawn in more and more to the story line. I also look forward to exploring more of Marissa Doyle’s writings. Thanks to librarything.com for offering this for review. ( )
