When Nicola Ferguson first started gardening, she quickly realised that she couldn't find a book that would help her with her new, dark, damp, walled garden, so she wrote one herself. The result is a fantastic reference book that leads gardeners quickly and easily to the plants that will grow well in their own gardens. Over 2,000 plants are systematically organised according to growing conditions, purpose and appearance. This book groups plants by exposure, special uses, and difficult conditions, such as acid soils, dry shade, heavy clay soil, aromatic leaves, fragrant flowers, damp and wet soil, and many more. It supplies a picture and cultural overview of the plants. I love this book and have used it for ages. It is one of my gardening bibles. ( )

Right Plant, Right Place:
The Indispensable Guide to the Successful Garden
The unique reference book that will lead gardeners effortlessly to the plants that will look best and grow best in their own particular garden. Over 1,500 garden plants are systematically organized according to growing conditions, purpose and appearance.

That pretty much says it all. If you analyze your available habitat, and select plants that naturally prefer those conditions, you will have a healthier and more attractive garden with fewer stressed plants. This is a British book, so the suggested plants work very well in the Pacific Northwest. Many of the plants are not hardy, and substitutions would be needed in more extreme climates, but the principles can be used anywhere. ( )
