children's fiction, 5th-8th grades? (narrator Genie is 11 and his brother Ernie is turning 14, incidental diversity, Brooklynites staying with unfamiliar grandparents in rural Virginia while their possibly-divorcing parents take a break). The story, told from the point of view of humorously inquisitive, sensitive Genie, gently handles serious themes including: dealing with grief, mild alcoholism, characters with disabilities, facing fears, and confessing truths. While the characters grow and change significantly over the brothers' month-long stay, it doesn't feel forced and I felt there was just the right amount of ambiguity at the end.
After reading The boy in the black suit last year and now this, I'm becoming a real fan of Jason Reynolds. ( )

This book would be a good fit for intermediate grades. Genie and his brother Ernie get shipped off from Brooklyn to spend summer on their grandparents farm in the deep south. Instead of lounging around the city filled with their friends they get to spend the summer cleaning up dog poop and picking snap peas for their grandparents whom they hardly know. Things begin to take a turn for the better however when Ernie discovers a pretty girl living next door and Genie begins to uncover the mystery of his grandpas longtime dispute with their father. This book would be a good fit for units on metaphor, conflict, or discussions on divorce.

Disclaimer: There is discussions of guns, divorce, death, hate crimes, hanging, and alcohol. (for those who may be sensitive to those topics) ( )

An achingly lovely but funny middle-school book about family and growing up. 4.5 stars. ( )
