"Being on the Murder Squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalog-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner. There's nothing unusual about her-- except that Antoinette's seen her somewhere before. And that her death won't stay in its neat by-numbers box. Other detectives are trying to push Antoinette and Steve into arresting Aislinn's boyfriend, fast. There's a shadowy figure at the end of Antoinette's road. Aislinn's friend is hinting that she knew Aislinn was in danger. And everything they find out about Aislinn takes her further from the glossy, passive doll she seemed to be. Antoinette knows the harassment has turned her paranoid, but she can't tell just how far gone she is. Is this case another step in the campaign to force her off the squad, or are there darker currents flowing beneath its polished surface?"--… (mere)

I've always been a Tana French fan, but this one didn't quite get there for me. There was a section in the middle of the book that droned on endlessly and I almost gave up. But it picked back up and ended better than I expected. I wanted to give it four stars, but it just didn't quite get there. ( )

I listened to the audio version and "shite!" it was fun to have the story told by a narrator with an Irish accent.

Not my genre preference so I may judge it harsher than others that like and seek out crime mysteries. A couple of people I used to follow on GRs highly praised the book and once I saw it was easily found on audio, I gave it a shot. It was nice to have something easy going in the background during chores etc..

The MC is a bit of a bitch with a "they're all out to get me" attitude. The author justifies it as her being the only female in a male dominated profession that isn't too kind to her. Doesn't make her any less of a bitch. I'm not judging her, maybe I'd be a bitch too but I didn't really enjoy the cringe. She was all-knowing and just a bit too perfect also. Knowing what her "bitchiness" would cause, knowing how to apply it just right. *eye-roll*

The story was way too long. Way too much running through possibilities. The crime & bad guy was unimpressive. (tho I could mourn a bit for the future the victim was working on) The info dump by the best friend near the end was ridiculous and the daddy plot seemed unnecessary except I guess to make the detective and the victim have something in common so the all too perfect cop could know exactly how she must of felt.

I wouldn't of read it all the way through without the narrator, or if I was to be curled up in bed or on the couch with the book. For background while doing dishes, balancing the checkbook, etc... it was okay. ( )

Sometimes, when you wait for a book long enough, it’s impossible for it to live up to the expectations you’ve developed. I think that happened here. I loved the book, loved the story, but when considered against Tana French’s other books, it paled a little in comparison.

In French’s characteristic style, she’s deep inside her character’s head. The character is well developed. She knows who this person is. But I almost got the impression that she didn’t like this character as much as the others whose point of view she’s written from in the past. Maybe it’s me, though – maybe my interpretation is skewed.

Another thing missing from this book is the hint of the supernatural. Please don’t misunderstand, French never goes fantasy or sci-fi or horror, and maybe supernatural is the wrong word to use, but there’s usually a finely woven thread of otherness, the strange or unexplainable, that creates an added depth to her work. Still, a 5 star book that I recommend to my fellow mystery lovers. ( )
