It was good. The setting was new and intriguing and the crime and method of solving was interesting due to the time period and available tools of the time.
But it was a bit slow as far as books like this go. There was a lot of detail about the world and environment that may not be needed. I do feel the pace of the book matched the pace of the world it was set in. It wasn’t a book I got lost in and couldn’t put down. It was a slow methodical read. ( )

While the idea of mysteries set in the Calcutta of 1919 seems promising, and there are some good bits, this book doesn't quite jell. The newcomer in charge of investigating of the murder of a civil servant fairly high up in the colonial administration is structured in a fairly obvious way but what damages the book for me is that I felt no sense of place, only the relentless emphasis on the stifling heat of April. Sam Wyndham of Scotland Yard arrives in Calcutta after the Great War with memories of his late wife and trauma associated with his experiences at the front. He joins the local police force and almost immediately is thrown into a murder investigation with possible political complications. He is capably assisted by Sergeant Banerjee, one of a small number of Indian police officers in the force. Over the course of the investigation, Wyndham figures out life in India and confronts his own prejudices and beliefs.

This was a good mystery and what I needed at the time, especially for the novelty of the setting, at least for me; I haven’t read much set in this part of the world and need to remedy that. Hoping to continue with this series and other books, as well as Indian history. For these reasons I am glad to have picked up this book. ( )
