In the course of two novels and twenty-four stories Sherlock Holmes, faithfully documented by Watson, cements his reputation as the finest detective in the land. It's fitting that Volume I ends with "The Final Problem" in 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes' thematically, but also because with there was such an immense leap forward in style and quality of writing with 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. With that exception, Doyle will continue to find the most success in publishing individual stories, but in a different publishing atmosphere he would have left the pulps far behind him. 4/7/12 - 'A Study in Scarlet': 3 Stars Evil afoot in the promised land of latter-day saints. Mileage may vary. 4/24/12 - 'The Sign of Four': 2 Stars Excellent groundwork for the short stories and the Holmes/Watson dynamic, but otherwise dull. 5/5/13 - 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes': 3 Stars Finally the mysteries readers crave with some of his most famous cases included. 8/17/13 - 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes': 4 Stars Patience pays off as Doyle becomes ever more capable as a writer. HTML:Since his first appearance in Beeton??s Christmas Annual in 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle??s Sherlock Holmes has been one of the most beloved fictional characters ever created. Now, in one eBook, Bantam Classics presents all fifty-six short stories and four novels featuring Conan Doyle??s classic hero??a truly complete collection of Sherlock Holmes??s adventures in crime! Next, The Sign of Four presents Holmes??s famous ??seven percent solution? and the strange puzzle of Mary Morstan in the quintessential locked-room mystery. Also included are Holmes??s feats of extraordinary deception in such famous cases as the chilling ??The Adventure of the Speckled Band,? the baffling riddle of ??The Musgrave Ritual,? and the ingeniously plotted ??The Five Orange Pips.? Volume II begins with The Hound of Baskervilles, a haunting novel of murder on eerie Grimpen Moor, which has rightly earned its reputation as the finest murder mystery ever written. The Valley of Fear matches Holmes against his archenemy, the master of imaginative crime, Professor Moriarty. In addition, the loyal Dr. Watson has faithfully recorded Holmes??s feats of extraordinary detection in such famous cases as the thrilling ??The Adventure of the Red Circle,? I know that this is a book of its time, where classism exists, English Exceptionalism, etc etc. However, Doyle at times points out the hypocrisy - in "The Adventure of the Yellow Face", when Sherlock Holmes is hired to figure out what a secretive wife is doing, he finds she is hiding her much loved child from a previous marriage to a black man.
Most of these stories from both volumes have faded for me, but a few do stick out. "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is one my favorites. ( )
