So, I had a chat with a young mother, who was once a school chum of my daughter. It seems that kids these days are into Percy Jackson much more than Harry Potter. So, I figured I should give Percy a fly.

It seems that Percy is a half blood or demi god. We eventually learn that he's the son of Poseidon and a mortal woman. That wasn't supposed to happen. After WWII, the three major gods on Olympus — Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades — made a pact that they'd no longer consort with mortals. Apparently WWII broke out in some dispute over the various offspring of one or another of them. Anyway, Poseidon broke the pact, and "someone" wants to get old antagonisms stirred up again.

We begin with Percy in middle school. He keeps getting expelled from every school he's ever attended. This one is his seventh, I believe. He's almost made it to the end of the year without screwing up so badly that he needs to be expelled again. But, he has an issue with one of the teachers and essentially vaporizes her. So, he can't go back to that school again.

But this time, he is sent off to a special camp for "half bloods". He is attacked by a minotaur just before he crosses into safe territory, but his mother is carried off. Perhaps killed by the minotaur.

Percy makes some friends at the school, most notably Grover, who turns out to be a satyr, and Annabeth, who is a half-blood daughter or Athena. He gets some "hero" training at the summer camp. At some point, he is sent off on a quest, with Grover and Annabeth, to retrieve something of Zeus' that is believed to have been carried off to the underworld. He takes the quest, in part, because he is hoping to bring his mother back from the underworld. They have lots of adventures along the way. But make it to the underworld (whose entrance is in Southern California), and back. This is, apparently, the first of a number of sagas involving Percy, and perhaps Grover and Annabeth.

If you're into fantasy adventure kinds of stuff, and find the thought and speech patterns of middle school kids endearing, you're likely to enjoy the whole series.

My ten-year-old daughter and I read this book together. She loved it and is ready to start the next book in the series "Right now!"

I however took one star away because the parents, especially the Dads, in the book are horrible, unreliable, and uncaring characters. Not what I expect in life or a children's book. ( )

This is such a great book! A very easy and interesting read for pre-teens and teens alike. This could be great to connect to greek mythology in a history class, and it is a great representation molding history and modern day together. ( )

Thanks to this book, I got out of my reading slump, which started in January 2016. Thanks to the plot, the characters could finish a book without putting down and forgetting about it.
Maybe it is my Greek heritage and that this book returned me to my elementary years that were a long time ago. I love Greek mythology, and how Rick Riordan wrote it is very captivating from the first sentence. I was hooked even though this book is written for a younger audience. I can certainly see an adult reading it.
To the fellow history or social studies teachers, visiting this site is an interesting way for your students to learn about Greek Mythology and see it with another eye.
I really liked the idea of the way modern days of the Gods. Yes, a lot of myths were involved in this book. I can if some people didn't know what those stories are. This book has a lot of twists and turns that you can't put the book down. I had to find out what's going on.
A quote that stuck with me is, "...if my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself." (Chapter 21).
This book made me devour this book, and I already bought the second book. I am certainly going to read whatever Rick Riordan has written, writes, and will write. Thanks a lot, Mr. Riordan, for a fantastic read. ( )

The Lightning Thief is an exciting book which is difficult to put down. I became engulfed in and fascinated by the Greek Gods. I did not know anything about the Greek Gods except that Zeus was one of them before I read this book. I was so intrigued by them that I continued to do research on them after reading the book. This story kept me interested throughout, and I especially liked Percy's friend Grover, who is a satyr and a great friend to Percy. This book reminds me of the Harry Potter books, although it was not as interesting and exciting as them. ( )

"The Lightning Thief" is perfectly paced, with electrifying moments chasing each other like heartbeats, and mysteries opening out in sequence. The action never feels gratuitous; it draws its depth from the myths at its source.

Riordan's fast-paced adventure is fresh, dangerous, and funny.
