Howard Wallace P.I. is the story of 12 year old Howard who is obsessed with Sam Spade and other detectives. He has his own detective agency from which he solves cases, hands out bills and uses the proceeds to maintain his beloved bike "Old Blue" and buy stashes of his addiction, bubble gum. He adds a partner, Ivy Mason and soon the threats begin. The characters are quite believable with realistic detecting for kids, it also adds a few laughs. This book grips you from the first page and is a great story for a middle school reader or any adult who enjoys reading middle school aged story. I suggest this book would be a great read out loud book for my teacher friends. The way it is written I'm sure there will be sequels. ( )

Howard Wallace isn't an ordinary middle schooler. He speaks like Sam Spade and sometimes smacks bullies. This middle reader book was full of wit and fun. Reminded me a little of the Sammy Keyes series in quality of the mystery and great characters!
Some of the references might go over the heads of middle school audience, but I think that might work in its favor and expand a child's knowledge of classic private eyes.

Highly recommend.

Readers middle grade through middle age.

Received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy at Book Expo America. ( )

This kids mystery is told in the style of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler and features Howard Wallace, a middle school Sam Spade or Phillip Marlowe. Even though kids won't get the old school detective references, they'll appreciate a humorous story about friendship. ( )

This book is a delight. A hardboiled middle school private investigator, a case involving plenty of drama and corruption, true-to-life conflicts, an endearing boy-girl friendship, and a great big dose of humour. All of the PI lingo was basically my favourite thing ever.

Who among us didn't go through a phase as a kid where they kept surveillance logs and insisted on being called "Gumshoe" by their parents? I would have eaten this book up back then. Now? It's the most fun read I've had in ages. ( )

This was such a great book! I loved Howard's voice - picture a cynical private investigator from a 1950s television show - but in seventh grade. Howard grudgingly takes on the new girl, Ivy, as his junior partner, and the two of them set off to find out who's behind a recent crime spree at their school. I laughed on almost every page of this book and I can't wait to read more from this author! ( )
