"The crowning achievement from the preeminent writer of his generation: following Brightness Falls and The Good Life, Bright, Precious Things builds on a series increasingly akin to John Updike's Rabbit novels but with a long-standing if weathered couple at its heart. Russell and Corrine Calloway seem to be living the New York dream: book parties one night and high-society charity events the next; jobs they care about (and actually enjoy); twin children, a boy and a girl whose birth was truly miraculous; a loft in Tribeca and summers in the Hamptons. But all of this comes at a high cost. Russell, an independent publisher, has cultural clout but minimal cash; as he navigates an industry that requires, beyond astute literary taste, constant financial improvisation, he encounters an audacious, expensive and potentially ruinous opportunity. Meanwhile, instead of seeking personal profit in this incredibly wealthy city, Corrine is devoted to feeding its hungry poor, and they soon discover they're being priced out of their now fashionable neighborhood. Then Corrine's world is turned upside down when the man with whom she'd had an ill-fated affair in the wake of 9/11 suddenly reappears. As the novel unfolds across a period of stupendous change including Obama's historic election and the global economic collapse he inherited the Calloways will find themselves and their marriage tested more severely than they ever could have anticipated"--… (mere)

Sometimes revisiting "old friends" from the literary world can be very disappointing, but that was not the case for me as I read the third book centered on Russell and Corrine Calloway. The first book about them, BRIGHTNESS FALLS, is one of my all time favorites and I just re-read it in anticipation of this book coming out. He held up wonderfully and I think this was a great third piece of their story. I don't exactly know why but I just fall into their world and become thoroughly immersed in the story. ( )

I'm glad I started with The Good Life because neither of the other books in this trilogy would have compelled me to read them all. They're okay but not great in a run out and buy more right now kind of way.

Bright, Precious Days provides a real in-depth examination of a marriage and I really came to care about the characters who are approaching 50. After all, I've known them since they were in university! The writing is good and the characters are complex and well drawn, which is the most important thing for me. ( )

I read this last of a trilogy without realising there were two books before it. Well, I really enjoyed it. ( )

Starts slow with annoying urbane characters buts gains momentum to emerge as a tender examination of modern marriage. ( )

Once, not so very long ago, young men and women had come to the city because they loved books, because they wanted to write novels or short stories or even poems, or because they wanted to be associated with the production and distribution of those artifacts and with the people who created them.
