What makes a great teacher great? Who are the professors students remember long after graduation? This book, the conclusion of a fifteen-year study, offers valuable answers for all educators. The short answer is--it's not what teachers do, it's what they understand. Lesson plans and lecture notes matter less than the special way teachers comprehend the subject and value human learning. Whether historians or physicists, in El Paso or St. Paul, the best teachers know their subjects inside and out--but they also know how to engage and challenge students and to provoke impassioned responses. Most of all, they believe in two things: that teaching matters, and that students can learn. Bain describes examples of ingenuity and compassion, of students' discoveries of new ideas and the depth of their own potential. This book is a source of insight and inspiration for first-year teachers and seasoned educators.--From publisher's description.… (mere)

Very good and inspiring book about great teachers. Based on researching 63 exceptional teachers in higher education. It's not just technique! ( )

I can't say I was exactly expecting this book to change my life, but I'm amazed at how underwhelming it is. The author states that the contents to the book are universal, but I'd like to see how some of the exceptional professors profiled in the book would handle working at an open-enrollment community college. I don't disagree with anything in the book, but sometimes I can't even get my students to show up to class. ( )

This book is the beginning point for many good ideas, teaching experiments, and deeper research when it comes to teaching and learning in higher education. If you have read more recent books in this field, you may find the book repetitive. But it is part of the foundation of what we currently think about when we think about teaching and learning in higher ed. ( )
