Beautiful book with incredibly beautiful illustrations and a wonderfully inspirational message. This would be a joy to read with and to small children, who I am sure will love the pictures, and the whole experience.

The simple takeaway message about everyone having talents, and God-given gifts, no matter how small or insignifigant it may seem is one that children, I think will be able to understand and appreciate.
Although parents may want to note that the story does not actually mention God or Chistianity outright. Like in the book of Esther, He is there behind the scenes and by implication.

Overall, I book I will happily pass on to my sister, to read to her toddler over and over again.

I recieved a copy of this book from the publisher via Booklook Bloggers for review. I was not required to write a positive one, and all opinions expressed are my own. ( )

REVIEW: This book is about a baby wren who is in awe of the wonderful world around her, but she is perplexed why she can't do certain things that other animals can do. For example, she ponders over why she can't dive and catch fish like the kingfisher, why she can't swim like the sunfish, or why she can't soar into the storm clouds like the eagle. She wants to join in, but realizes her limitations and as a result, downgrades her own abilities. The baby wren, overwhelmed by the other animals, questions what she can do that's wonderful like the others. Soon after, the baby wren realizes that her own wonderful gift is her ability to create beautiful songs! As her song echoes throughout the canyon, the eagles declare, "you are only little, but your song is bigger than the whole canyon!"
I enjoyed this book because of the inspiring message and the beautiful artwork. I also noticed the word continuity that runs through this book. Each time the wren interacts with another animal, she says "Oh, how wonderful!", and "Why aren't I a ____, so I could ____ too!" This helps young children predict what will happen next.

MEDIA: watercolor and pencil (light, pastel colors)

GENRE: fantasy fiction picture book

USES:
(1) This book could be used to highlight the theme of individualism because it teaches that everyone and everything has a unique gift. We just have to find that gift within ourselves and share it with the world. The class could go around and say something unique about themselves, such as a talent of theirs.
(2) This book could also be used to talk about supporting one another. In the end, the eagles declare, "you are only little, but your song is bigger than the whole canyon," which shows the power of supporting one another. I could ask, "how did the eagle support the baby wren?", "what can you do to support a friend when they try something new?" ( )

Beautiful illustrations accompany the sweet and simple message of one tiny bird with a big, big gift. Baby Wren And The Great Gift explores the wonders of creation and the uniqueness of what God has created. A very small bird wonders what her gift could be as she contemplates all the wonderful things other animals can do. The prose is easy and unhurried with a repeating refrain to divide each scene. Bold illustrations pair well with the narrative. Perfect for family reading, or a larger group story time, this storybook will capture your child’s imagination and open up new ideas of what makes him/her special.

Recommended.

Audience: children ages 4-8
