Coming straight off the successfully lengthened story in Squire, Lady Knight is an apt conclusion to Keladry's quartet. As the conflict with Scanra in the north gears up Keladry is shown a vision by the Chamber of Ordeal, tasking her with a quest to find and defeat the mage who is creating the killing machines which are magically animated by the souls of children. Keladry has clearly always been a champion for animals and other downbeaten people (sevants and page alike), but it is this conflict which truely earns her the moniker "Protector of the Small." Pierce's previous two series focus on themes around knighthood and kingdoms; and animals and wild magic, respectively, so the explorationof themes around social justice in this series fit well into the changing scope of Tortall and its ruling class. Next we get to explore the burgeoning area of spy craft (thanks George Cooper) and Pierce begins to explore the external nations to Tortall in more depth, so the expansion of her realms and storytelling craft are given a full range of potential. Whenever I discuss Tamora Pierce with friends and fellow fans, I'm always asked which is my favourite series, and I usually reply with Alanna(it was my introduction to this incredible author and probably always will be my first love) but then I reread the Protector of The Small quartet and am reminded of what an amazing person Keladry is and how good this series is. I find I preferred the books on Kel's training over her book on being a knight, but this was still very well written and exciting from the first page to the last. I wish there were more. ( )

I was sad to see no jousting, but I suppose that really wouldn't fit with the somber atmosphere of war that Pierce seems to be creating here.

Still a Pierce book: there is plenty of anachronistic speech and a happy ending is guaranteed.

It was quite nice to read a book where the heroine isn't paired off at the end and doesn't ride off into the sunset to go get baby-making. Kel has always come-off as a workaholic and I was glad to see that she didn't end paired with Cleon.

As for those reviewer who noted that Kel wasn't very heartbroken and should have been in that situation? Well. Um. Distance changes things and something primarily based on hormones tends to fade away with time. Trust me. Given all of Kel's reservations about the situation, I thought her reaction to Cleon breaking it off was perfectly in character.

Oh, Kel. I'll miss you. I kind of wish she's had someone to love and kiss at the end, since Raoul and Neal were both getting married, but I understand that it wasn't in the cards.

Better review later ( )
