One of science fiction's premiere humorists turns her eagle eye to the crushing societal implications of telepathy. In a not-too-distant future, a simple outpatient procedure that has been promised to increase empathy between romantic partners has become all the rage. So when Briddey Flannigan's fiancé proposes that he and Briddey undergo the procedure, she is delighted! Only the results aren't quite as expected. Instead of gaining an increased empathetic link with her fiancé Briddey finds herself hearing the actual thoughts of one of the nerdiest techs in her office. And that's the least of her problems.… (mere)

Annoying in all the typical Connie Willis ways. A sweet ending got me to upgrade from 2 stars to 3. ( )

A bit overwrought at times, but mostly an interesting story. C.B. tended to come across as patronizing and Briddey somewhat dense. The ending was unnecessarily labyrinthine and repetitive-- however, there was enough humor and sweetness and social satire throughout to keep me engaged. ( )

Too much implausibility, and I'm not talking about the sci-fi aspects of the book. The characters are shallow and behave in extreme ways. I mean, who'd be worried to be seen by someone from their company at 6 am on a random hotel parking lot? There are some issues about the way the male characters behave in this book as well. I tried, but mild interest to see how everything ends isn't enough to commit to 600 pages...

I'm about 3/4 done. I'm finding her style - caffeinated, ping-pong, never get to any resolution - annoying in such a long novel.

Done. The narrator did fantastic. I will still read Connie Willis but I didn't really enjoy this book. Too long for what it really offered.

I kept waiting for this book to get better. To start, the author took way too much time with boring scenes. She also would time/location jump from one sentence to the next so it was rather hard to follow at times. I felt there could have been better explanations of what was happening but at same time just fewer explanations. It was all around just not good and I’m kind of disappointed that I read the entire thing hoping it got better. ( )
