Sixteen Runaway Pumpkins by Dianne Ochiltree

Summary:
A young raccoon goes out to the pumpkin patch to collect pumpkins for her grandpa. She counts and stacks the pumpkins so high in her wagon that it tips over. The pumpkins spill and smash everywhere. She doesn’t know what to do! Her family then comes to her rescue to help her make pumpkin pie.

Personal Reaction:
This book would be great for fall reading. I really liked it because it rhymed and had a lot of silly words. I think that would keep children’s interest. I also loved all the different types of animals throughout the book.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1.I could take the children to a pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin.
2.I could make pumpkin pie for the children to eat.

Genre: This is a good example of fantasy, because the animals talk, gather pumplins in a wheelbarrow, and bake a pie which would not happen in real life, but the author is able to make it become believable.

Style: The author uses alliteration (Gramp's garden gate) to help create a better picture in your mind which adds to the story.

Media: Watercolor and oil paint
