"One of the most valuable skills in our economy is becoming increasingly rare. If you master this skill, you'll achieve extraordinary results. Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship. In short, deep work is like a super power in our increasingly competitive twenty-first century economy. And yet, most people have lost the ability to go deep-spending their days instead in a frantic blur of e-mail and social media, not even realizing there's a better way. In DEEP WORK, author and professor Cal Newport flips the narrative on impact in a connected age. Instead of arguing distraction is bad, he instead celebrates the power of its opposite. Dividing this book into two parts, he first makes the case that in almost any profession, cultivating a deep work ethic will produce massive benefits. He then presents a rigorous training regimen, presented as a series of four "rules," for transforming your mind and habits to support this skill. A mix of cultural criticism and actionable advice, DEEP WORK takes the reader on a journey through memorable stories-from Carl Jung building a stone tower in the woods to focus his mind, to a social media pioneer buying a round-trip business class ticket to Tokyo to write a book free from distraction in the air-and no-nonsense advice, such as the claim that most serious professionals should quit social media and that you should practice being bored. DEEP WORK is an indispensable guide to anyone seeking focused success in a distracted world"--… (mere)

Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World af Cal Newport (2016)

    Få tingene gjort : kunsten at være produktiv uden stress af David Allen (corporate_clone)
    corporate_clone: Deep Work relies in fact quite heavily on GTD. I believe GTD must be a quite important component of the Deep Work practice if it has to be successfully implemented.

It was a nice read for the beginning of the year. I was convinced that we need to decide to do deep work and that means breaking many habits of today's life.
From finding space and time to concentrate to eliminating all that distracts us, the author shows reasons and evidence for all the strategies presented.
And the message is simple, albeit not as easy a it seems: disconnect! Simple as that.
======
Update: Second read
The first time I read this book I was convinced that focus is important but I couldn't really disconnect and do deep work. The message was with me since 2017, when I first read it, and I slowly made changes to my habits. The impact could be seen on the way I started using social media (or rather, the way I avoided it altogether) and noticing how little time I spent deep thinking about anything.
Now I feel like I can really apply the strategies, for real.
1) Choose to work deeply
2) Embrace boredom: a skill to be trained
3) Quit Social Media: use the Craftsman approach to tool selection
4) Drain the Shallows: scheduled and organized routine ( )

Very straightforward and clear, with an attempt to justify its suggestions. It's not surprising based on the content of the author's blog. The recommendations are not earth-shattering, but the theme of weaning oneself from multitasking is welcome.

I've always been fascinated by the idea of "flow". The ability to dig deep into a topic and concentrate on it for long periods of time takes some time to nurture and practice to get good at - and when I stop practicing it gets more difficult. The focus on deep work and the advantages it can bring in this book range from learning, to execution to producing the best work you're capable of. ( )

Very convincing. Could probably have been shorter. ( )

This was a really useful read to me. It confirmed some thoughts and behaviors for me and made me think about some others it may be worth adopting as I try to balance a sometimes frenetic set of duties in my current job with a need for time to do more focused thinking. I've written a slightly more in-depth set of notes on the book here. ( )
