On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are Scott Burroughs-the painter-and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family. With chapters weaving between the aftermath of the crash and the backstories of the passengers and crew members--including a Wall Street titan and his wife, a Texan-born party boy just in from London, a young woman questioning her path in life, and a career pilot--the mystery surrounding the tragedy heightens. As the passengers' intrigues unravel, odd coincidences point to a conspiracy. Was it merely by dumb chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work? Events soon threaten to spiral out of control in an escalating storm of media outrage and accusations. And while Scott struggles to cope with fame that borders on notoriety, the authorities scramble to salvage the truth from the wreckage. Amid pulse-quickening suspense, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, human nature, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.… (mere)

bluepiano: It too is a novel telling of an airplane crash--this, of a real one--and of the lives and thoughts of some of the passengers.

2.5 The narrator is very good. The story is ok. The good people are honorable, noble, heroic. The bad people are bad. One person who should be bad isn't so bad, but he dies. I love the Fargo series and Legion. This disappointed me. ( )

I struggled with this book. Good plot. Good ideas. Too many character backgrounds to keep up with at times. But it could be me, as I lost someone close to me and had trouble focusing. ( )

A private plane crashes on a flight from Martha’s Vineyard to New Jersey, killing everyone but a struggling artist and a young boy that he rescues. The opening chapter with his incredible eight hour swim to safety is fantastic.

This is sort of a literary fiction suspense, thriller novel. Was this an accident or foul play? All of the rich and famous victims on the planes could have been the intended victims. It is hard for this novel to live up to its opening. There is a sad poignancy to learning the backstories of all the victims after they have died. But the answer to the mystery is sort of banal. That’s probably the point.

I wish I could criticize the cartoonish depictions of many of the characters – the bloviating right-wing talking head, the corrupt investment banker, the idle dilettantes, but unfortunately the real world seems to have given us characters even more unbelievable than those in this novel.

A very engaging novel.

A good read...fast paced, interesting characters with a satisfying ending (if there is such a thing for a book about the passengers and survivors of the crash of a charter jet). ( )

Fun story: I didn't even intend to read BEFORE THE FALL; I had seen some buzz for it in my inbox and on GR, but I was ready to resign it to a long mental list of popular books I would never have time to read (and if I did, it would be at least several years after everyone else had stopped talking about it).

And then last Friday my boss, who doesn't know I'm a horrific bibliophile and compulsive reader, let me browse through the new shipment of bestsellers before they had to be shelved - and, well, that's when I saw BEFORE THE FALL, flipped through it, and fell in love. (If I hadn't finished the book I'd brought with me to work that morning, there's a good chance this review wouldn't have happened!) I pretty much spent 90% of my free time (and some work time) reading this book.

It's great, y'all. It's really, really great. The writing is quick and punchy but reflective, the characters are complex, sometimes painfully so, and the plot never drags for a moment. I loved the disbursement of backstory throughout the main narrative; that plus the plane crash mystery made it a perfect read for a Lostie like myself who was already considering rewatching the series this summer.

I withheld one star only because sometimes the introspection got too much; Hawley, and his main protagonist Scott, have a lot of thoughts about modern culture and technology, and sometimes it detracted from the main story. Plus, at times Scott's dialogue was a bit - much? I'm not entirely sure how to explain it. Maybe it's an issue of Scott being used as a mouthpiece for some of Hawley's own ideas, and it makes the dialogue stilted as a result. At least it made Scott's voice uniquely his own; I can guarantee ya no one else in this book talks or thinks like him.

But if I still had a favorites shelf? This would be on it. I told two people while at work yesterday that I loved it. Thanks, boss. Don't let anyone tell you there's no perks in working at a library.

PS: The ending, for me, is not BS. I won't say what it is, but I found myself getting to the meat of the mystery and going "shoot, that's accurately plausible" so in that way, it's not LOST i.e. no magic islands, no eternity water saving anyone's asses from the fire. But I'm saying that because I know some people see "weird plane crash with two survivors" and wonder if the author does an asspull at the end. No asspull here, y'all. Hawley knows what he's doing.

PPS: This would make a great mini series for TV; the visuals would be stunning. Considering Hawley's work with FARGO, I expect FX to be looking real close at how this book does in sales over the next couple of months, if it hasn't been optioned already. ( )
