I met a Plaguer today, one of the very few who survived the last outbreak of Bloody Death. She said horrible things about me and my companions. We all called her crazy afterward and claimed this was the reason they needed to be locked up. They spread lies that could hurt our fragile world, nearly brought to extinction 150 years ago. But here's the catch: she was right about me. I have a niggling fear that she was right about my friends, as well. What if the Plaguers are right about the people in charge? What if they are right about everything? This book is for all the Plaguers, the truth sayers branded and marked as liars, often hunted and sometimes forgotten. This book is for the girl who was right.… (mere)

Well I wasn't expecting to enjoy this, but I really did.
Ok, truth be told I found Dal obnoxious and somewhat bratty in the beginning but I assume, after all the events, she will mature and wise up a bit.
Dax was a little too stoic for me, I understand why he is so guarded but it makes it hard to connect to him as a character.
Romance-wise, there is potential but it all depends on the next installment. ( )

This is the first book in The Wilds series by Augustine, there are four books in this series. This story was not what I thought it was going to be (for some reason I thought it involved magic and faerie...no idea where I got that from). The book is decently written but is a pretty stereotypical YA post-apocalyptic book.

I bought the audiobook bundle for this but am reviewing the books separately. I wouldn’t recommend listening to this on audiobook because I wasn’t a fan of the narrator. The narrator has a lot of trouble with character voices, making them very high-pitched and strident. Some of the voices are just plain hard to listen to. In addition to that the volume she reads at is very inconsistent so I kept having to turn the volume up when Dahlia was talking and then turning it down when Bookie was talking.

This is a post-apocalyptic story about a girl who was institutionalized after surviving the Bloody Death; she is called Plaguer and is determined to escape captivity. After escaping (with the assistance of a mysterious boy) she finds out the Wilds are not what she thought they would be. In addition it appears that she may have special powers and that everything she was told about Beasts and Plaguers may be wrong.

There are a lot of questions left unanswered at the end of this book. We still don’t understand how being a Plaguer has really affected Dahlia and what is up with the Beasts that roam the Wilds.

Overall this was an okay read but not great. I think I would have liked reading it more on paper or ebook format. The characters act fairly juvenile throughout and this isn’t all that creative of a concept. I would tentatively recommend if you like reading post-apocalyptic YA books with a heavy dose of romance in them. ( )

I flew through this book in a day. The storyline is phenomenal. A plague, a psych ward-ish prison, dystopia! I have to agree with the other reviews that the characters could have had a little more depth, but I also like the mystery in it. The author gave us enough to know who these characters are but leave us wanting to know more. I agree that the main "heroine" can be rather annoying but some of her comebacks are rather witty. As I am still looking for the answer on what a death walker really is ( don't comment any spoilers if you've finished the series please) and feel like the other main character, Dax, only revealed soooome of what we are dying to know, I am continuing on to book 2 with optimism, hopefulness and excitement :) ( )

I was intrigued by the blurb about this book and series. It's a fast paced urban fantasy that had me race through the book. Dahlia is a plaguer (someone who has survived the Bloody Death). She has been trapped inside a Mental institution for the Criminally insane since she was 4 years old. Plaguers are people who have survived the bloody death and are pariahs of society, deemed crazy and locked up away from normal humans. They're tortured, abused and ultimately killed. Nobody ever taught Dal the things she learned. She's both innocent and world wise at the same time, determined to escape her prison and come back to free her friends and is just waiting until the opportunity presents itself.

However before she has the chance she is rescued by the mysterious Dax. A man from the wilds. He is her chance to enact her rescue plan for her friends. But Dax needs her for his own agenda. He's one scary individual who's tight lipped about what exactly that is. They will use each other and Dal thinks that's just fine.

I loved the character development in this book. We watch Dal grow, come into her own and as she does we watch her crack Dax's cold and hard exterior. She chips away at him, too stubborn to let him keep his secrets for long. Donna writes well and I thought the story was fast paced and an easy read, and I sure enjoyed the book. Donna has built a unique world and I'm ready to read the next book in the series, The Hunt, to solve the questions that remain at the end of the Wilds.
