Although I didn't find this story all that powerful when I read it 30 years ago, I find it very much so now. The intervening years have allowed me to see that a Republic of Gilead is not a possibility only in fiction. We are a species of enslavement and enforced values. While freedom is a word we love to use lavishly, freedom is a rather elusive quality in real life. I doubt that we would need women as handmaids if our current society were to degenerate into a similar religious theocracy since our birth rate is decently strong. But forcing women to positions of absolute subservience is a strong possibility.

I sound rather anti-man in this review, but what I really feel is anti- alpha male. Men who view women as second-class citizens best suited to being barefoot and pregnant are not extinct. They just need to get sufficient numbers of themselves into power for Gilead or something very like it to become a reality. Kudos to Atwood for an amazing book. ( )

I finished this book yesterday, and I enjoyed it. Hopefully I will have some time later on to write about it. ( )

I had read this many years ago. It felt pretty slow for me this time around, especially the first third or so of it. Still it's an important and horrifying book. ( )

Offred's story was nothing less than terrifying. I was more disturbed by this than any other dystopian novel I have read. It was a little too real, struck a little too close to home, probably because the protagonist was a woman and the Republic of Gilead society had such twisted roles for women. To think that she was a normal woman at one time, she had a daughter and a mother and friends, a husband, a home, a pet cat and a job.....when we meet Offred, she has nothing to call her own, not even her given name. She has lost everything important to her, and through no fault of her own.

Because of this book I have taken certain paranoid precautions.....just in case. I wouldn't want to end up like Offred. ( )

My grandparents left Uganda in the 1970s, forced out by mounting racial tension and changes in the law making it impossible for Indians to own businesses and property. They just missed the violence, but I've heard stories of other family members, who lingered. One member, watched as her husband was brutally beaten and murdered. I didn't ask what happened to her, and I don't really want to know. I recite this with horror, but with a sort of cool detachment. It happened in a far off place; it's ancient history.

I feel that this story (The Handmaid's Tale) is not quite fiction. It could have happened to me if I were Jewish in 1930s Europe; it could be happening to me now if I were born a few thousand miles to the east; it could happen to me in the future under some Donald Trump-esque regime. It's a story that history writes, forgets, and re-writes in an endless cycle. ( )

And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.

And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

And she said, Behold my maid Bihah, go in unto her, and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

As all historians know, the past is a great darkness, and filled with echoes. Voices may reach us from it; but what they say to us is imbued with the obscurity of the matrix out of which they come; and, try as we may, we cannot always decipher them precisely in the clearer light of our own day.
Time has not stood still. It has washed over me, washed me away, as if I’m nothing more than a woman of sand, left by a careless child too near the water.
The shell of the egg is smooth but also grained; small pebbles of calcium are defined by the sunlight, like craters on the moon. It’s a barren landscape, yet perfect; it’s the sort of desert the saints went into, so their minds would not be distracted by profusions. I think that this is what God must look like: an egg. The life of the moon may not be on the surface, but inside.
But remember that forgiveness too is a power. To beg for it is a power, and to withhold or bestow it is a power, perhaps the greatest. Maybe none of this is about control ... Maybe it’s about who can do what to whom and be forgiven for it. Never tell me it amounts to the same thing.
There is more than one kind of freedom, said Aunt Lydia, freedom to and freedom from. In the days of anarchy, it was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from. Don’t underrate it.
