I received a copy of this novel from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I am a huge fan of the Charlie Parker series and this latest installment is certainly enjoyable for many of the reasons that this whole series is so good. The characters of Charlie Parker, Angel, Louis, Sam, and the usually supporting cast members are all here and provide the usual level of entertaining gravitas as well as the witty banter we are used to. However, this story, was a bit weaker, in my view.

Much like watching an overmatched boxing match, I never felt that Charlie Parker and his high-powered crew were sufficiently challenged. “The Cut,” an isolated cultish community that exists alongside yet outside the larger community around it is an interesting idea and it appeared at first blush that they had the sufficient level of menace to be a challenge to Parker, Louis and Angel. Ultimately, however, it became clear that they were not even in Parker’s league.

I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series. Every single installment can’t be a home run, although, in this series, almost all of them are.

4 stars because anything Connolly writes is really good. I am also, as another reviewer pointed out, judging this Parker novel against the other in the series, which is a very tall order since this series is absolutely spell binding. So far this is only the second installment that I did not absolutely love and keep in mind your opinion may differ.

I have not read any other books in this series but it certainly intrigues me. The main character is a totally depraved individual parading around as a mostly ignored man. This book would appeal to those who enjoy psychological thrillers with deeply disturbed characters. I really enjoy this kind of genre and pleasantly surprised as this story unfolded. I am now interested in reading the prior books which groomed this disturbed character. ( )

Private Investigator, Charlie Parker, and his two distinctive assassin friends, Angel and Louis, accept a job from a man recently released from prison. Jerome Burnel was once hailed as a hero who interceded on day at a coffee chop to prevent multiple killings. Shortly after that, his life was torn apart and he was framed as a child pornographer. Jerome also describes The Cut, a remote and inbred community in West Virginia hiding several secrets, including someone known as The Dead King. They are determined to keep society away and don't mind using violence, fear and intimidation to do it.

This is the fourteenth book in the Charlie Parker series and I think it could be read as a standalone but has much deeper meaning if you read at least the two or three books prior to Time of Torment. Charlie has died and then returned to the living. Charlie’s daughters, one living and one dead are becoming increasingly more visible in the last two books, so there is a very strong supernatural element.

This is an amazing series and John Connolly always produces a character driven, literary suspense novel of incredible depth. I listened to the audio narrated by Jeff Harding who did a brilliant job of maintaining the menace facing Charlie, Angel and Louis throughout the story. Connolly never disappoints and I'm looking forward to where he takes Charlie next.

With a decidedly darker bent than the previous books in this series, Charlie Parker rolls on.

Beginning with the story of Jerome Burnel and ending with the story of an isolated area of West Virginia called the Cut, John Connolly deftly weaves this story of the Dead King. Despite the fact that Angel and Louis are again here, A Time of Torment lacks the often humorous slant those two bring. This is a very dark book, indeed.

Even though this story took its time, I never found myself bored. In fact, I adored the slow build of atmosphere and the depth of the characters. However, I had hoped to learn more about Charlie's daughters, and I did, just not as much as I had hoped. The end of this book, though, gave me such a case of the chills I could barely hold my Kindle.

I'm not sure that I can tell where John Connolly is going to take Charlie and his daughters in the future, but I think it's going to be an even darker place than any we've visited so far. His story is winding down now; he's aging and showing the signs of all his various battles, both mental and physical. Never a super hero- Charlie is human, and as such, there's only so much his mind and body can take. I think his journeys are coming to and end now, but with so many unanswered questions, I fail to see how he's going to get to the finale or what that will consist of, exactly.

I feel no need to worry though. I trust John Connolly is going to make Charlie's last adventures worthy of our time. I only worry that my heart might not be able to take the final outcome.

My highest recommendation to fans of Charlie Parker and John Connolly!

*Thank you to Net Galley and Atria for the advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review. This is it.* ( )
