We've all had those blatant scamming emails: unclaimed insurance bonds, diamond-encrusted safety deposit boxes, close friends marooned in a foreign country... Standard procedure is to delete on sight. But for a comedian with a mischievous side and a lot of time on his hands, the spam folder proved the perfect opportunity to have some fun. Dot Con is the story of what happened when James Veitch decided to play the scammers at their own game, providing a hilarious showcase of the conversations he orchestrates with online imposters. Naturally, James replies with an offer of help, ready to wire money by Western Union (it's always Western Union) safely and securely, but not before the recipient has given something in return. Whether it s his long-lost love recounting tales of their favourite moment together, or the business man providing a quote for James' new book, it s amazing to see how easy it can be to scam the scam artists. Packed full of Nigerian princes, can't-miss investment opportunities and eligible Russian brides, his correspondence leads to surprising, bizarre and hilarious results. No wonder the New York Times said of Veitch A wicked sense of humor... I laughed my ass off.… (mere)

A collection of transcripts in which comedian James Veitch responds to email scams and generally messes around with them until they give up. If you've seen him perform live and talk through some of these same email exchanges, reading them might feel a bit dry without his boyishly enthusiastic delivery, but this is still a fun, casual read. A quick and funny read. Who hasn't wanted to reply to a scammer and waste their time like they're trying to waste yours? It got a little repetitive, but was such a fast read. ( )
