Scott O'Hara and Edgar Lopez have been partners in the homicide unit of Haydon Cliff's Police Department for the last couple of years. Edgar is openly gay and a bit of a player. Though Scott is also gay, he keeps it to himself. Even from Edgar. Until one night, a slightly drunk Scott imitates sex between them. Scott doesn't expect the sex to be repeated. He doesn't do one-night stands or fuck-buddies. But Edgar has other ideas and Scott can't seem to resist his sexy partner. While they try to solve the mystery of who is murdering Haydon Cliff's homeless, they also try to solve the mystery of whether Edgar's heart can really be unobtainable. Scott, who tells the story, likes to keep things close to his chest. Not professionally, he works well with Edgar as his crime-solving partner. But the fact that Scott is “secretly” as gay as out-and-proud Edgar is another matter. Scott wants a steady relationship, and has been disappointed by an ex who cheated on him before, so he’s not ready to rush into anything that is (in his mind) bound to go wrong sooner or later. After all, Edgar is a player. So when Edgar turns up wanting more after their first night of sex, Scott is confused. Not that it changes his behavior… but he begins to think maybe there could be more. It takes Edgar’s initiative for them to even begin working out what each of them wants.
If you like detectives who secretly want each other, if you want to know more about two men who each have a bunch of hang-ups and a head full of assumptions, but no ability to communicate, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with a murder mystery in the background, then you will probably like this short story.
