Well that was a crazy book. In the [b:The Fifth Season|19161852|The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1)|N.K. Jemisin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1386803701l/19161852._SY75_.jpg|26115977], we spend pretty much the entire story in Essun's head, learning how the world of the Broken Earth works and watching the beginning of its end. In [b:The Obelisk Gate|26228034|The Obelisk Gate (The Broken Earth, #2)|N.K. One of the most interesting bits to me was that rather than having three different points of view from the same woman's life, this time we're following multiple different characters in roughly the same timeline. We have Essun (etc) of course, but also a plotline with Schaffa the guardian (he's was already fascinating and terrible to being with), and the third following Essun's daughter Nassun as she comes into her powers and has to survive traveling with her father.

It's an interesting contrast to the first book and actually getting into other people's heads is something I appreciate.

Plotwise, The Obelisk Gate is actually somewhat weaker than The Fifth Season. While a relative lot of things end up happening through the book, in the end there was a major case of 'wait, that's it?' There are piles of (fascinating) world building , but other than that, everything is relatively self contained and mostly setting up the finale in [b:The Stone Sky|31817749|The Stone Sky (The Broken Earth, #3)|N.K. It's very much a sequel/middle book and for that I'm very glad to see that it's already out this time around.

We know roughly what needs to happen (the MOON!), but it's still wonderfully fuzzy what the teams are and how that's actually going to come to be. I look forward to it!

Onward!

(Worth listening to. The audiobooks are rather well done.) ( )

Like the first book of the trilogy, it starts off with a bang then gets a little long/less tightly edited in the middle. I'll admit I skimmed some of the middle of the novel...I really struggle with reading second person and those segments were a real slog for me. Just not my cup of tea.

The world building is phenomenal. If you like journeys through fantasy lands, you'll love this. ( )

Ambitious second book in a trilogy, and credit to Jemisin for being a new voice in fantasy, with some similar themes as the great Octavia Butler. But, I was confused for much of this book, which I think was the result of the changing narration style, especially the use of second person. The complex relationship among Nassun, Essen and Jija was weaved throughout the story, but felt really incomplete, at least to me. It was hard to understand the motivations of the lead characters, making it harder to like or identify with them. I did like the underground community and its strong leader, who was willing to adopt orogenes/roggas despite their being treated as pariahs in most other communities, and its battle to survive against the odds. Putting this on hold. I'm currently on a manga phase. Again.

I hope I don't forget the first book. It kinda bore me, I don't wanna reread it.

Geen tijd om recensies te schrijven. Dringend aan deel drie beginnen. Zegt genoeg. Niet? ( )
